Apache 310 Expert Review
The collaboration between TVS Motor Company and BMW Motorrad has led to the development of a 310cc engine, which powers small BMW motorcycles and TVS bikes, including the Apache RR 310 and Apache RTR 310. Over the years, TVS has made various upgrades to the Apache RR 310, the second most powerful bike in the line-up
after the RTR 310. Here's everything you need to know about the only faired TVS bike in India.
Design
The TVS Apache RR 310 remains eye-catching despite being around for 5 years due to its sporty and premium design with muscular fairing, well-shaped fuel tank, and powerful dual LED projector lights that reminds us of big bikes. The styling is goes well with the elegant-looking Titanium Black colour option, which features red highlights and trellis frame painted in red, enhancing its sportiness.
Customers can also choose the race-replica colour scheme exclusive to BTO (Built To Order) models. In addition, TVS also worked on the fly screen mounting to reduce vibrations.
Engine, Mileage & Performance
The TVS Apache RR 310 houses a 312.22cc liquid-cooled engine with a 6-speed gearbox and a slip-and-assist clutch for lighter clutch action and preventing the rear wheel from locking up under hard downshifts.
The motorcycle features four riding modes—Rain, Urban, Sport, and Track—activated by shutting off the accelerator and pressing the 'Up' button on the left switchgear. These modes have two unique power configurations and anti-lock brake system (ABS) sensitivity.
Peak outputs reach 34PS @9700 rpm and 27.3Nm @7700 rpm in both Sport and Track modes while decreasing to 25.8PS @7600 rpm and 25Nm @6700 rpm in Rain and Urban settings, respectively. Ride-by-wire tech improves fuel injection accuracy.
Most of the power is concentrated between 3000-7000rpm, and the bike can cruise easily at 100kmph with the tachometer hovering at 6000rpm. The vibrations at this speed are minimal. Even though it can easily cruise at 120kmph for an extra 1000rpm, there's a bit of vibrations above 6000rpm. That said, the vibrations are not very bothersome.
The urban mode delivers better low-end grunt, particularly effective in urban environments. During testing, the bike gave a mileage of 33.1 kmpl in the city and 34.45 kmpl on the highway. If ridden carefully enough, you can cover 330 to 350 km on a full tank.
Handling & Ride Quality
The TVS Apache RR 310 boasts accurate handling, offering confidence without bothering the rider, similar to the KTM RC390.
Transitioning from lighter bikes such as the Yamaha R15 V4 or TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, newcomers will find the RR 310 surprisingly accommodating. Not only does it smoothly absorb mid-turn bumps, but it also allows riders to keep their course steady throughout the bend with minimal correction. Quick steering ensures swift direction changes whenever necessary.
With higher-positioned clip-on handlebars, the RR 310 reduces strain on the wrists, facilitating seamless navigation through congestion. The ample 180mm ground clearance also ensures the bike goes over bad roads without any issues.
The Michelin Road 5 are grippy and inspire plenty of confidence on both dry and wet roads. Though the brake lever feedback could have been better, the overall braking performance is better than the BS4 bike, thanks to the grippier tyres.
Comfort
The Apache RR 310's riding posture is reasonably comfortable for city commutes and highway touring, with a slightly forward-leaned stance. The 810mm tall seat might pose a challenge for shorter riders, but the narrow middle section allows them to rest their feet firmly on the ground. Plus, it's spacious enough for larger riders, making long trips relaxing and stress-free.
Those who want an aggressive riding position during track sessions can consider purchasing the Racing Kit, accessible through the Built To Order (BTO) program. Featuring lower, tighter handlebars and raised footrests, this package is great for track riding but not so much for everyday commutes.
Features
The motorcycle sports a 5-inch vertical TFT display with TVS' SmartXonnect Bluetooth connectivity. It features calls and message alerts and built-in turn-by-turn navigation. Moreover, each riding mode (Rain, Urban, Sport and Track) features a dedicated display that can be viewed on light or dark modes, based on the time of day, or can be set manually as well.
The updated console also provides essential ride-related data, including vehicle health and post-ride analysis, rev limit, and engine temperature. The information displayed is organised cleanly and is easy to read, except for shorter riders who may struggle to view the turn-by-turn directions. The module also uses smartphone sensors to display ride-related data like G-force measurements and lean angles.
Should you buy TVS Apache RR 310
The TVS Apache RR 310 is a versatile bike that serves equally well for daily trips, weekend outings, demanding track days in places like Chennai or Coimbatore, or even long distance travels. The updates have made it a much better bike overall, and is among the best choices in the 300cc segment for riders looking for a great all-rounder.
