The latest model gets a sportier exhaust system, more features in the instrument cluster, and two optional performance kits

  • The Dynamic Kit gets adjustable suspension, whereas Race Kit gets parts offering a sportier riding stance.
  • You can customise your bike with the kits and colour schemes with TVS’s new ‘Built To Order’ initiative.
  • Costs around Rs 4,500 more than the previous-gen TVS Apache RR 310.

TVS has launched the 2021 iteration of its flagship faired bike, the Apache RR 310, in India at Rs 2,59,500. This makes it Rs 4,510 more than the previous generation model, which retails at Rs 2,54,990 (both ex-showroom Delhi). Online bookings are now open, and the production for the first two months are 150 units per month, which is then limited to 100 units for the following months. The waiting period ranges from 30-60 days after placing the order.

The Hosur-based manufacturer has equipped the 2021 TVS Apache RR 310 with a new exhaust system and a revised geometry to ensure greater lean angles. This road-legal exhaust has a sportier exhaust note, and TVS claims it also improves the engine response. The full-colour TFT instrument cluster with smartphone connectivity now comes with the ability to store and view important bike-related documents on the cluster and on the app.

The company has also added a new Dynamic engine rev limit indicator, showing the engine temperature and RPM parameters. Additionally, there’s a day trip meter and overspeed indicator as well. For better security, TVS offers a wave-bite key with an inbuilt adjuster tool to tune the suspension damping. All these features are offered as standard.

Additionally, TVS offers two optional road-legal kits: Dynamic and Race. The former comprises a fully adjustable KYB inverted front fork with 20-step compression damping, 15mm preload adjustment, and 20-step rebound damping. The rear monoshock comes with a 10-step preload adjustment and 20-step rebound damping. The kit also includes a brass-coated drive chain with anti-rust protection to ensure greater life. The Dynamic Kit costs Rs 12,000 if added to the 2021 iteration via the 'Built To Order' scheme. More about it in the forthcoming paragraphs.

The Race Kit is all about aggressive ergonomics. It consists of a tucked-down handlebar kit that’s 8 degrees downward and 5 degrees inward compared to the stock clip-on handlebars. It also features raised (up by 30mm) rider’s foot pegs claimed to offer a 4.5-degree higher lean angle. The foot pegs are knurled for better grip. The footpeg assembly is compatible with the new exhaust system. The kit should ensure lower wind resistance while riding tucked-down and improved control and handling on the race track. TVS has priced this kit at Rs 5,000 if added to the updated version via the online customisation.

Like Royal Enfield’s ‘Make It Yours’ initiative, TVS now offers a ‘Built To Order’ scheme through which you can purchase the kits. You can build and book your customised motorcycle via the ‘TVS ARIVE’ app or the configurator on the company’s official website. The two kits are also compatible with older-generation models (although it will be priced higher as separate kits), and the exhaust system can be fitted to the older BS6 bike too.

The company has also introduced a Race Replica Graphic scheme (costs an extra Rs 4,500) for the motorcycle, celebrating TVS’ 39 years of racing experience. It gets the distinctive red, blue, and white TVS racing colours. You can also customise the alloy wheel colour (the red one costs Rs 1,500) and have a custom race number on the visor through the ‘Built To Order’ programme.

The rest of the motorcycle, including the powertrain and the underpinnings, have remained unchanged. To recap, the 312.2cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine makes 34PS at 9700rpm (in Sport and Track Mode) and 25.8PS at 7600rpm (in Urban and Rain Mode). The peak torque stands at 27.3Nm at 7700rpm in Sport and Track Mode, whereas it is dialled down to 25Nm at 6700rpm in the Urban and Rain Modes. The engine works alongside a 6-speed transmission with slipper clutch, propelling the motorcycle to a claimed top speed of 160kmph (in Sport and Track Modes) and 125kmph (in Urban and Rain Modes).

The 17-inch alloys are wrapped in the same Michelin Road 5 tyres at both ends. It also uses the same 300mm front and 240mm rear petal disc with dual-channel ABS. The 11-litre fuel tank has remained unchanged. We’d have loved to see a larger unit in the 2021 model for better range.

All in all, with the new addition and optional kits, the 2021 TVS Apache RR 310 is by far the most feature-packed motorcycle in the 300cc supersport segment. The kits should make it a whole lot more track-friendly than before. The Dynamic Kit, in particular, makes the 2021 Apache RR 310 the most affordable motorcycle with fully-adjustable suspension in India. We expected TVS to also offer span-adjustable brake and clutch levers, but they seem to have been missed out. Expect this update to be provided in the 2022 model.

It rivals the KTM RC 390 (Rs 2,77,517, ex-showroom Delhi), which is all set to get a major update soon! it would be interesting to see whether KTM will be able to offer as much (in terms of features) as the Apache RR 310. Another pricier alternative would be the long-in-the-tooth (and less feature-packed) Kawasaki Ninja 300 (Rs 3,18,000, ex-showroom India).
