TVS NTORQ Expert Review
One of the sportiest scooters on sale in the country, the TVS Ntorq 125 has set tall benchmarks in the 125cc category of scooters with its edgy design, best-in-class features and segment-leading performance numbers. The Ntorq 125 is the first scooter in the Indian two-wheeler market to feature smartphone connectivity,
which have now become standard in many other scooters.
Currently, the TVS Ntorq 125 lineup comprises five variants in India – Base, Race Edition, Super Squad Edition, Race XP, and XT. Prices start from Rs 84,636 for the cheapest TVS NTorq 125 variant and goes up to Rs 1,04,641 for the top-end Race XT variant, all prices ex-showroom Delhi. There are several colours available, including Marvel's Superhero themed editions such as Amazing Red (Spiderman Edition), Lightning Grey (Thor Edition), Combat Blue (Captain America Edition), and Stealth Black (Black Panther Edition) in the Super Squad Edition variant.
Design
The overall design of the TVS Ntorq 125 has remained unchanged since its launch in 2018, though TVS has managed to keep the scooter fresh with regular cosmetic updates and new variants. All variants of the TVS Ntorq 125 have the same edgy-looking appearance for the apron with a trapezoidal headlamp on its lower central part. The Ntorq 125 also has multi-spoke black alloy wheels, split pillion grab rails and silver bar end weights.
The Base variant of the TVS Ntorq 125 comes in monotone shades, while the Race Edition features chequered decals on the apron & side panels and dual-tone coloured panels. The Super Squad Edition is based on the Race Edition but comes in four exclusive colour schemes, each depicting the superheroes from the Marvel Universe.
The Race XP edition takes the sportiness of the Race Edition further with tweaked chequered graphics, red-coloured graphics and dual-tone body panels in different colour themes. The top-spec XT Edition, available in a Neon colour scheme, differentiates itself with the neon theme carried out all over its body panels, with unique graphics.
Engine, Mileage & Performance
All five variants of the TVS Ntorq 125 have the same single-cylinder, air-cooled, three-valve, 124.8cc engine, which is paired with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). This engine claims 9.5PS @7000rpm and 10.6Nm @5500rpm in the Base, Race Edition, Super Squad Edition, and XT variants.
However, in the Race XP edition, this engine is in a slightly higher state of tune – 10.2PS @7000rpm and 10.9Nm @5500rpm. It also comes with segment-first riding modes: Street and Race, with the former meant for offering better mileage by tuning the engine's throttle response. In our real-world mileage test, it offered 51.54kmpl in the city and 56.23kmpl on the highway. In fact, in the city, it offers better mileage than even the Race Edition in our mileage tests.
While the standard variants are already peppy, the Race XP takes the performance even further up. You can easily reach 90kmph smoothly. The claimed top speed is 98kmph.
Besides having class-leading performance figures, the engine of the TVS Ntorq 125 is also known for its characteristic sporty and deeper exhaust note.
Handling & Ride Quality
Equipped with 12-inch alloy wheels at both ends, all the variants of the TVS Ntorq 125 have a 100/80-12 tyre at the front and a 110/80-12 tyre at the rear, which are the widest tyres to be offered in a 125cc scooter in India. These wide tyres give plenty of grip. The grippy tyres along with the firm suspension helping in easy direction changes, and also ensure confidence while cornering, even at higher speeds. The same suspension setup works against the ride quality on bad roads as it tends to thud over potholes. You will have to reduce the speed considerably before going over speed bumps.
The Drum edition of the Base variant has 130mm drum brakes at both ends, while all the other variants of the TVS Ntorq 125, including the Disc version of the Base variant, have a 220mm petal disc brake in place of 130mm drum brake on the front wheel.
Comfort
The handlebar is reasonably high, which means the knees of only very tall riders will foul with the bars on lock-to-lock turns. The seat is well-cushioned and roomy for both rider and pillion. This along with the handlebar position ensures an upright riding stance. The floorboard is also wide enough for your riding boots, with enough extra space for a small backpack.
Features
The TVS Ntorq 125 is the best scooter in the segment in sheer equipment on offer. Except for the base variant, which has a halogen setup for the headlamp, all the other variants have an LED headlamp with a T-shaped daytime running LED light in the middle. The other features common to the entire variant line-up of TVS Ntorq 125 include an LED tail lamp, clear lens turn indicators, an engine kill switch, a 20-litre under-seat storage space, a USB charger, and an external fuel filler.
In the Base, Race Edition, Super Squad Edition, and Race XP variants, the TVS Ntorq 125 has a full-LCD instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation. This display unit also gets more informative bits like a multi-mode display for Steet Mode and Sport Mode, Best Lap and Last Lap times, incoming call and SMS alerts, phone battery strength & signal display, and voice assist.
In the top-spec XT edition, the instrument console has two screens – an LCD and a TFT display. While the LCD screen shows a speedometer, odometer, lap timers, and fuel gauge, the TFT screen shows social media notifications, best lap time data, navigation, food delivery notifications, e-commerce alert notifications, live cricket scores, among others.
Should you buy TVS NTORQ 125
The TVS Ntorq 125 is an excellent scooter for those who prioritise styling, outright performance, and geeky features. It offers the best-in-class performance, great mileage (for a sporty 125cc scooter), making it a great choice for young buyers. The presence of a wide variety of variants also makes it versatile for buyers with different budgets.
