Yamaha has updated its range of scooters for 2019. For this year, the Ray Z gets a maintenance-free battery and Unified Braking System (UBS). Owing to the updates, prices for the 2019 Yamaha Scooter models have gone up by Rs 400 for drum and Rs 600 for disc brake-equipped variants.
Yamaha Ray Z is designed to feature an edgy styling to attract youngsters who crave a reliable city commuting scooter. The peppy engine that presents grunt to the throttle of this agile scooter is the 113cc, air-cooled, 4-stroke single cylinder carbureted engine producing 7.1PS worth of peak power at 7500rpm and a maximum torque of 8.1Nm at 5000rpm. The Yamaha Ray Z had a claimed top speed of 86kmph. The Blue Core technology and the high-ignitability nickel spark plug integrated into the engine makes up for a claimed mileage of 66kmpl. The Ray Z is available in four colour options: Astral Blue, Moon Walk White, True Blue and Regal Red. The appealing body dynamics of the scooter is complemented with its stylish front apron design, distinguished headlamp assembly, and the clear-lens side indicators. The Ray Z relies on front and rear 130mm drum brake units for its braking performance. Yamaha Ray Z is one of the first scooters that the company had introduced for the Indian two-wheeler market. Targeted primarily youngsters, the Ray has been designed to look sporty and presents itself as an easy to ride two-wheeler.
The scooter has a sporty design philosophy and it looks compact. The visor, along with the headlamp positioning at the apron make the front end look really appealing. The seat also looks well padded and stylish at the same time. The Yamaha Ray Z comes drenched in an all black theme. The rear end receives a body coloured wing type grab rail that further steps up the visuals.
The Yamaha Ray Z is powered by a 113cc, air-cooled, single cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission. The Blue Core enabled motor generates respective power and torque of 7bhp and 8Nm.
The Yamaha Ray Z gets 130mm drum brakes at both ends that offer an effective braking. The suspension assembly of this scooter has telescopic forks at the front while the rear end is taken care of by spring aided hydraulic shock absorbers.
This scooter has a total kerb weight of just 104kg, making it an easy to ride and lightweight two-wheeler. The Ray has been fitted with a 5 litre fuel tank. The scooter gets a stylish instrument cluster that has been designed in sync with carbon fibre appearance and hence, looks impressive. The scooter also has a maintenance free battery that actually proves less hefty on the pocket of the rider.
The Yamaha Ray Z is currently available at the company’s dealerships across India at a price of Rs 50,817 (Ex showroom, Delhi). The scooter challenges the likes of TVS Jupiter, Hero Maestro Edge and Honda Activa i. The Ray is available in a total of four colour options to choose from namely Regal Red, Astral Blue, Moon Walk White and True Blue.
Design
The Yamaha Ray Z is a sporty and lightweight offering by the Japanese manufacturer. The front section of this scooter looks sleek and the headlamp is fitted at the apron instead of the conventional front cowl. A small visor is also bolted at the cowl that lends the scooter a sporty touch.
The scooter comes with a comfortable seat and looks stylish as well. The overall body design of the Yamaha Ray Z looks quite compact and sporty at the same time. The wing type rear body grab rail also looks appealing and is one of the style highlights of this scooter.
Yamaha Ray Z has overall body dimensions of 1835mm x 675mm x 1090mm (LxBxH) and has respective wheelbase and minimum ground clearance of 1270mm and 128mm.
Engine, Mileage & Performance
Powering the Yamaha Ray Z is a 113cc, single cylinder, air-cooled engine that has been linked to an automatic gearbox. The peppy motor is good for churning out a maximum power output of 7bhp along with a peak torque of 8Nm.
The engine is enabled with the company’s patented Blue Core technology that ensures a good combustion efficiency along with a decent fuel economy. The engine is now BS-IV compliant and the company claims a mileage of 66kmpl with this set up. The Yamaha Ray Z can achieve a top speed of 86kmph.
Handling & Ride Quality
The Yamaha Ray Z has been equipped with 130mm drum brakes at the front as well as rear. The suspension system of this scooter comprises of telescopic forks upfront along with spring aided shock absorbers at the rear. Thanks to this, the scooter avails a comfortable ride quality.
The Ray rides on 90/100 sized tyres at the front and rear. These come mounted over 10 inch wheels. The scooter has decent handling characteristics and it feels really nimble in tight city traffic. The straight line stability of the scooter is also satisfactory and you will never feel that the Ray loses its composure when pushed hard.

The Yamaha Ray Z comes with Automatic Headlamp ON (AHO) facility and hence, the headlight of this two-wheeler stays always ON in order to improve its visibility and minimise chances of an accident. Furthermore, the scooter comes assisted with 130mm drum at both ends. These offer a good feedback and bite and stops the vehicle as and when required. The Yamaha Ray Z also gets a powerful 12V halogen headlamp that offers good illumination at nights.
