Is it still the best value for money scooter?

The Honda Activa has been the best-selling scooter for not only the last month, but for quite some years now. Honda revolutionised the scooter segment in our country with this product, thanks to the scooter’s bulletproof reliability and a neutral design. With the 6G, is the Activa still relevant in today’s fast-paced market then? Let’s see:

The 6G now takes after the bigger Activa 125 in terms of design and the fresh look is a welcome change. It still gets bodywork made from metal for better durability. So, it’s a good thing then the Honda Activa still retains that sturdy appeal and minimalist, yet elegant styling. The fit and finish levels are pretty good too.

The Activa 6G is now powered by a BS6-compliant 109.51cc engine that makes 7.79PS and 8.84Nm. Now, that might be 0.18PS and 0.16Nm less than its predecessor, but to us, it was barely noticeable. The scooter’s highlight is its refinement and it’s still capable of maintaining speeds over 70kmph without feeling stressed.

The most important factor for scooters in this segment is their fuel efficiency. The Activa 6G didn’t disappoint and delivered a real world mileage of 59.5kmpl in the city and 55.93kmpl on the highway in our tests. The tweaks to the engine have improved both the refinement and fuel efficiency of the scooter when compared with its predecessor.

Most scooters nowadays come with a fully digital, or even semi-digital instrument cluster. The Activa’s chief rival, the TVS Jupiter gets a digital cluster with Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation. In such times, the 6G’s fully analogue one is a disappointment. What’s more disappointing is the fact that it’s a downgrade from the 5G’s already dated semi-digital unit.

The telescopic fork and 12-inch front wheel are the most significant changes on the 6G. The updated hardware makes quite a difference in the riding quality. On our poor city roads or highways, this setup does well at handling the undulations and you get a much better ride quality than before.

Unfortunately, the Japanese marque has skimped on the brakes front by not employing the Activa with disc brakes (even as an option). You do get combi-braking, but the stopping power could’ve been a whole lot better with a front disc. The fact that it misses out on alloy wheels too is disappointing.

You get a switch next to the key slot to open the external fuel filler cap. You no longer have to open the boot to fill fuel. If you push the switch down, it’ll open up the 18-litre underseat storage compartment. Now that’s convenient!

That said, the scooter misses out on a USB charging port and an under-seat light, which would’ve made rummaging through stuff in the dark that much easier.

With a price tag of Rs 71,432 (ex-showroom Delhi), the Honda Activa 6G is neither the most affordable scooter nor the most feature-packed one. But, it is still a great daily driver with its solid build quality and frugal engine. However, we wish Honda had given bits like disc brakes, alloy wheels and connectivity features to make it a well-rounded package.
