Checking out scooter options? Here’s what we expect in 2021

The scooter segment in India saw a lot of movement in 2020. From the Bajaj Chetak electric scooter to the Honda Activa 6G, we saw several new entrants. 2021 shouldn’t be any different. So, here’s a list of all the scooters expected to launch in India in 2021

Suzuki Burgman Electric

Expected price - Rs 1.20 Lakh

Expected launch - July 2021

We expect Suzuki to bring the Burgman e-scooter in India in Q1 of 2021. While it may have the same bodywork as the petrol-powered Burgman Street, it will be tweaked to house the lithium-ion battery pack. The Burgman Electric will offer performance similar to 110cc petrol-powered scooters. It will rival the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube electric, and the Ather 450 Plus.

Aprilia SR 160

Expected price - Rs 1.09  - 1.16 Lakh

Expected launch - July 2021

For 2021, the Aprilia SR 160 will receive a facelift. It will get a newly designed headlight with an all-LED treatment and some minor changes to the front apron. We also expect to see some new paint schemes. The motor will continue to be a BS6-compliant 160.33cc unit. Output figures will be around 11.01PS and 11.06Nm. Expect the SR160 to get a price bump when it’s launched in Q3 of 2021.

TVS Creon

Expected price - Rs 70,000

Expected launch - July 2021

After the iCube, TVS is looking to expand its electric scooter line up with the launch of the Creon e-scooter in Q3 of 2021. The concept was unveiled back in 2018 at the Auto Expo. The Creon gets three lithium-ion batteries and an electric motor that can make 16.31PS of power. It features Bluetooth connectivity, digital instrument cluster, three riding modes, geofencing, GPS, anti-theft and park assist. We expect the Creon to have disc brakes for both, front and rear with single-channel ABS as standard.

Yamaha NMax 155

Expected price - Rs 1 Lakh

Expected launch - May 2021

Yamaha made a switch to 125cc scooters with the Fascino 125 and the Ray ZR 125, for 2021, we expect the Japanese brand to make an even bigger leap. Yamaha had showcased the NMax 155 to Indian audiences a couple of years back and now it’s time to introduce the premium scooter in our two-wheeler space.  It features an all-LED headlamp, tail light, and digital instrument console with smartphone connectivity. The NMax 155 is powered by the R15 V3-derived 155cc motor that makes 15.36PS of power and 13.9Nm of torque. It gets telescopic forks at the front and twin gas-charged shocks at the rear.

TVS Jupiter 125

Expected price - Rs 76,000

Expected launch - September 2021

Apart from the Creon electric scooter, we expect TVS to launch Jupiter 125 in 2021. Although TVS hasn’t hinted at the prospect of a Jupiter 125, we think it makes a lot of sense. The most popular 125cc scooter is the Suzuki Access 125, and although the TVS Ntorq 125 is a good scooter, it’s targeted towards the youth. The styling of the 125cc scooter can be based on the Jupiter but it should be more subdued. The feature list could include all-LED lights, smartphone connectivity, and a digital instrument cluster.

Hero eMaestro

Expected price - Rs 1 Lakh

Expected launch - June 2021

Hero MotoCorp showcased the eMaestro concept at the Hero World in 2020. It has the Maestro Edge 110 bodywork, suspension and wheels but will likely house a new frame to fit the electric motor and battery pack. Hero MotoCorp owns a stake in Ather Energy. Hence, we can expect the Hero eMaestro to use the learnings and maybe even share some components with the Ather 450. Hero aims at pricing the eMaestro lower than its competition which includes the Bajaj Chetak and the TVS iQube.

Honda Forza 350

Expected price - Rs 3 Lakh

Expected launch - June 2021

The Forza 350 is already out in the international market with a Euro5-compliant motor. It will likely be launched in India in Q3 of 2021. Initial plans are to bring the Forza 350 as a CKD product and later on localise it if things go as planned. The maxi-styled scooter will have a 279cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected motor and will make 25PS of power and 27.2Nm of torque. If Honda does bring it to India, the Forza 350 will be among the most powerful and expensive scooters to go on sale in India.

Aprilia SXR125

Expected price - Rs 1 Lakh

Expected launch - April 2021

Aprilia has entered the maxi-scooter division in India with the SXR160. It further plans to expand the maxi-scooter range with the launch of SXR125 in Q2 of 2021. We expect the SXR125 to borrow the SR125’s motor rated at 9.92PS of power and 9.7Nm of torque. Styling will be similar to the Aprilia SXR 160 and it will be interesting to see if all the features make their way to the SXR 125. The main motive of the Aprilia SXR 125 will be to make the SXR range more affordable as the SXR 160 is quite expensive at Rs 1.26 lakh (ex-showroom).

Honda PCX Electric

Expected price - Rs 1.2- 1.40 lakh

Expected launch - August 2021

With the Suzuki Burgman e-scooter already spotted and other rivals like TVS and Bajaj launching their respective electric scooters, Honda is likely to take the plunge in the electric scooter space in 2021. The Honda PCX electric may have two removable battery packs under the seat. It will ride on a telescopic fork at the front and twin shocks at the rear with 14-inch wheels. The Honda PCX electric will be a premium electric scooter rivalling the Ather 450X.

Odysse Electric

Odysse Electric plans on adding three new models to their line up for 2021. Two low-speed electric scooters and one electric motorcycle in the commuter segment.
