Buying the cheapest variant of the newly launched R2 will not leave you shortchanged as it is still value-packed. Here’s how
Yamaha has officially entered India’s competitive 200cc supersport segment, launching the all-new YZF-R2 with a starting price of Rs 2,30,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The base variant, available in Metallic Black or Dark Bluish Gray, shares its core engine and electronics with the pricier models, aiming to attract new riders to the supersport fold. Here’s what you get:
Design
There’s not much major difference here, it looks similar to the pricier variants, but the overall theme is pretty blacked-out. Fans who want their supersport to look subtle will like this. It even gets blacked-out wheels but thankfully, the fork is finished in gold on all variants, which add just the right amount of pop to the overall design.
Features
Standard equipment includes a 5-inch full-colour TFT instrument cluster with Y-Connect Bluetooth smartphone connectivity. This one has a speedometer, tachometer, gear position indicator, and fuel consumption data. It also gets Yamaha Ride Control (YRC), offering three selectable ride modes: Street, Sport, and Rain. Even the traction control system is standard in the base variant.
Engine and Underpinnings
All variants of the Yamaha YZF-R2 are powered by the same all-new engine, so there's no performance compromise with the base model. The powertrain is a 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, DOHC, 4-valve unit. Key specs are as follows:

Yes, there’s no VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) technology on this bike, but with the extra horsepower, we hope it is as fun and engaging to ride as the R15, if not more.
Safety & Hardware
Yamaha has made no compromises on safety, equipping the entire YZF-R2 range with a full suite of modern safety aids as standard. This includes a dual-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and traction control. Brakes include a 282mm front disc with a radially-mounted Nissin caliper and a 220mm rear disc with Bybre. The suspension setup consists of a 37mm Upside-Down (USD) fork and a linked-type monocross rear suspension, though adjustability is reserved for the R2M. The bike rides on 17-inch wheels fitted with 100/80 (front) and 140/70 (rear) tubeless tyres.

The only important aspects that the base variant misses out when compared to the mid and top variants are fancier colours, a bidirectional quickshifter, a keyfob, and adjustable suspension and levers. Sure, these goodies enhance the overall riding experience, but are not really necessary when you prioritise the best value.
Since Yamaha has not compromised on the performance or electronic rider aids, the base variant still offers good bang-for-the-buck. Interestingly, you can also buy the base variant, and then install the quickshifter for around Rs 6,000-7,000 that’s available as part of the accessory catalogue. You can even buy the adjustable levers for an extra 2,000-odd rupees. That’s a win-win in our books.
