What are the alternatives to the Splendor Plus?

The alternatives to the Hero Splendor Plus are other entry level commuters like the Honda Shine 100, TVS Radeon, TVS Sport, Honda CD 110 Dream and the Bajaj CT 110X. Among them, the best alternative is the TVS Radeon as it offers peppy performance and the mid and top-spec variants get a negatively-lid LCD instrument console that shows readouts like real-time mileage, a clock and low fuel warning on top of the regular readouts like speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge.

Splendor Plus Expert Review

BikeDekho Experts
The Hero Splendor is a decent motorcycle that is able to deliver reliable performance and a comfortable riding experience. The bike also comes with a decent set of features but when there are 110cc alternatives around at the same price, it doesn't make sense to go with the Spendor.

Overview

Hero Splendor Plus - India’s best commuter bike?

The Splendor Plus is one of India’s most iconic motorcycles and has been the country’s best-selling bike for a while now. And that’s for a reason, since it’s affordable to buy and maintain while having an extremely reliable engine. But now with the advances we’ve made and newer models in the market, is the Splendor still the best 100cc commuter in the market or does it now feel old? We tell you all of that and more right here on BikeDekho.

Hero Splendor Plus Xtec

Design

  • The Splendor has evolved to keep up with the times and hence, now has quite some modern elements. There’s an LED headlight, new attractive colour schemes, and a digital console with Bluetooth connectivity in the top variant.

  • That said, as modern as the bike has become, it still retains the silhouette of a Splendor. Every time I see this one on the road, there’s no mistaking it for anything else. So on the whole, the bike is still simple-looking, narrow and very approachable for all sorts of riders. Each and every person in the office could ride the Splendor very easily.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

Engine

  • There’s a reason why the Splendor is one of the best bikes to learn to ride a bike on. The 97.2cc engine makes 8.02PS and 8.05Nm, paired to a four-speed gearbox. Check out its acceleration figures here:

Acceleration

0-40kmph

City Performance

  • The Splendor’s torquey engine means that the bike started moving the moment I released the clutch and that makes it extremely easy to ride in the city. I slotted it into third or even fourth gear and it covered pretty much all the city riding scenarios.

  • The bike doesn’t need a lot of gear changes either. It has enough torque to chug along even if you’re in a gear higher. The only time I really needed to downshift was when I was trying to make an urgent overtake.

  • While the engine never feels ultra smooth, the refinement levels are reasonable up until about 60kmph. So while I did feel some vibrations, it was never annoyingly vibey in the city.

Highway Performance

  • Post 60kmph, the vibrations start to increase significantly. In fact, after the 65-70kmph mark, I started feeling major vibrations in the seat and that made things quite uncomfortable. That said, the engine does have enough grunt to maintain a cruising speed of around 80kmph all day long. Given that I ride a fair bit every day, my commute has highways as well and the Splendor maintains decent speeds, as long as I put up with the vibrations.

  • After 80kmph is when the bike barely has anything left and reaching 85-90kmph is a struggle. That said, it is a 100cc bike after all so that’s understandable.

Mileage

  • The Splendor has always been the mileage king and it continues to hold that crown even today. It returned a mileage of close to 80kmpl in the city during a day of real-world riding. In fact, some of the more gentler riders in the office even got a mileage of upto 100kmpl!

Handling & Ride Quality

Suspension & Ride quality

  • The Splendor has always been comfortable and the Splendor Plus is no different. The suspension absorbs everything and you can take the bike through pretty much any speedbreaker or pothole on the road and it will absorb everything. Its suspension has been tuned in such a way that even with a lot of luggage on, the suspension still never bottomed out easily and I felt very much in control.

Handling & Braking

  • The Splendor is super light and hence handling is effortless. The bike changes directions with minimal efforts and filtering through the traffic is very easy. The brakes on the drum brake variant were okay. The drum brakes do not have a lot of bite, as it is with drums, and I had to plan my braking well in advance. But with a little bit of planning, I should be able to stop in time so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Comfort

Hero Splendor Plus Xtec Review Photo Gallery

Rider comfort

  • The 2024 Splendor Plus gets a long seat that’s enough to accommodate me, my pillion and some luggage between us. So in terms of space, there were no complaints. Where it’s not the best is the seat. It’s narrow and that means with my taller frame, (6’0) my knees stuck out a bit more than what I would’ve liked. A slightly wider seat could’ve made the Splendor that much more accommodating.

  • The other thing is that the seat is quite soft. So while it feels nice and comfortable during short city commutes, after riding it for more than an hour continuously, I started sinking into it. I rode it for 2-3 hours continuously during our testing and by then, I really had to take a break because it started to get quite uncomfortable.

Pillion comfort

  • It’s a similar story for pillions too. There’s plenty of space but the narrow and soft seat means taller pillions will feel that their knees jut out a bit and that after longer rides they might start sinking in. That said, changing the seat’s foam or even getting a new seat is not a very expensive modification you can make to your Splendor if you intend to ride it for long hours.

Storage options

  • The Splendor comes with a small box on the right side that fits your toolkit and first aid kit. In my testing, I could only store some documents in it, and that's about it. As someone who rides bikes daily, I find that any storage space is useful, and having a safe place to keep documents is a big plus instead of no space. I also tried out a matching side bag that clips onto the bike – this really opened up the storage options, letting me carry lunch and small groceries easily.

Features

Safety

  • Being a simple 100cc commuter, the Splendor has a combined braking system and that’s it, in terms of safety features.

Convenience

  • Talking about convenience, the Splendor Plus Xtec & Xtec 2.0 boast of a lot of features, including a fully digital console with Bluetooth connectivity. Connecting to the console is done using the Hero Connect App (available both on iOS and Android), and it’s easy enough to connect, with me just following the on-screen instructions.

  • Connected features include Turn-by-turn navigation and call/message alerts. The turn-by-turn navigation works well, but since it only shows direction and distance for upcoming turns, it’s not as effective as using Google Maps on your phone.

  • Other features include a  real-time mileage indicator, side-stand engine cut-off and a lot more, making the Splendor Plus Xtec the most feature-loaded in the segment.

Should you buy Hero Splendor Plus

If I was in the market for a no-nonsense, simple 100cc commuter, the Splendor Plus would still be my pick. It truly is the king of the segment. Features, comfort, mileage, reliability and now even modern looks, the Splendor has it all and it’s very hard to fault. While the pricing might seem a bit expensive, given its competition, the sheer peace of mind you’d get with a Splendor would be worth it for most. Plus the savings that will be made thanks to the lower running costs over the years would help too.

Which variant of the Splendor Plus should you choose?

  • The Splendor is available in a total of 6 variants, a couple of which only have colour differences. And there are a total of 11 colours to choose from, spread across all the variants.

  • I think the base variant of the Splendor Plus, which costs Rs 75,411 (ex-showroom Delhi), makes more than enough sense for most. It has a couple of really good-looking colours such as the Force Silver and Axis Grey,  and otherwise the entire package remains the same.

  • But if you insist on getting an Xtec model for the features, we recommend the disc brake variant, which costs Rs 83,461 (both prices ex-showroom Delhi). Better braking at the front especially in an unpredictable riding environment like ours is invaluable.
