Expert Review
Introduction
With the Shine 100 DX, Honda hasn’t changed the formula, it has refined it. The platform and engine remain untouched, but the DX, priced at Rs 71,746 (ex-showroom) introduces upgrades that make daily commuting feel less basic and just a little bit more premium.

Design & Quality
The first thing I noticed was the added chrome garnish above the headlamp. It immediately makes the fascia look richer. It’s subtle, but it lifts the overall presence of the bike. The chrome exhaust muffler cover further adds to that premium touch. Paired with the blacked-out engine, the bike feels more cohesive visually. The darker engine finish makes it look cleaner and slightly sportier compared to the standard version. The fuel tank has also been redesigned, it’s now slightly bigger at 10 litres, one litre more than the standard bike.
Colours
Honda offers the Shine 100 DX in four colours: Imperial Red Metallic, Pearl Igneous Black, Athletic Blue Metallic, and Geny Gray Metallic. Personally, I find the Imperial Red Metallic to be the most eye-catching colour while still looking mature. Pearl Igneous Black gives the bike a more understated appeal. The graphics are sharper than before and complement the chrome accents well.

Wheels
The five-spoke alloy wheels continue, but the most practical upgrade here is the switch to tubeless tyres. For a daily commuter, this is significant. Minor punctures are easier to handle, and overall peace of mind improves.
Quality
Paint finish and chrome elements look well executed for the price point. There was a slight rattle from the front cowl and console surround – more so when going over bad patches, potholes or rumble strips.

Features & Practicality
The biggest upgrade is the LCD instrument cluster replacing the analogue twin-pod unit. It displays live mileage indicator, average mileage tracking, range, service reminders, digital clock, fuel level monitoring, and an eco-indicator. I especially appreciated the eco-indicator during city use, it helps you ride more efficiently. The display remains clear and easy-to-read even under bright sunlight.
Convenience Features
The DX gets a side-stand down engine cut-off sensor, which I find genuinely useful in daily riding. The Combined Braking System (CBS) continues to assist in braking and adding to stability. ABS isn’t offered, but that’s expected in this segment.

Rider & Pillion Comfort
The low 786mm seat height, paired with the fairly narrow seat and mid-set footpegs – make the bike feel unintimidating. At 5’ 10”, I had no trouble planting both feet firmly at a stop, and shorter riders will also feel confident and in control. The rider’s triangle feels neutral and well judged. The handlebar is positioned in a way that keeps my back straight without forcing me to lean forward. I never felt stretched out or cramped, even during longer stretches through city traffic.
Pillion Comfort
The seat itself is long and generously cushioned, and what I appreciated most is that it doesn’t sag under weight. Even with a pillion on board, the foam holds its shape well and provides consistent support, especially over broken roads. It strikes a nice balance of being comfortable without feeling overly soft. The grab rail adds an extra layer of reassurance, giving the pillion something sturdy to hold onto while navigating tight city traffic.

Engine, Performance & Mileage
The Shine DX continues with the same 98.98cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine that makes 7.38PS at 7,500rpm and 8.05Nm at 5,000rpm. In traffic, the engine feels easygoing. Low-end torque allows relaxed take-offs without aggressive throttle input. I rarely felt the need to downshift frequently in slow-moving traffic. On open stretches, I found it comfortable cruising at around 50-55kmph. Beyond that, the engine begins to feel strained, but stability remains acceptable for short highway runs.
The 4-speed gearbox shifts smoothly. The clutch action is light, which reduces fatigue during heavy traffic conditions. I didn’t experience false neutrals during my time with the bike. In real-world city riding, I recorded an impressive 79.6kmpl. With the 10-litre fuel tank, the theoretical range comes close to 796km. Even accounting for variations in riding style, comfortably exceeding 700km on a full tank feels achievable.

Ride Quality & Handling
Ride Quality
Out on real-world roads, the Shine 100 DX feels composed and predictable. With my 69kg weight, the telescopic fork feels pleasantly compliant. It absorbs sharp potholes and uneven patches without transmitting harsh jolts to the handlebar. In the default setting, I found the rear suspension slightly firmer when riding solo. The moment I added a pillion, it became far more comfortable. It doesn’t feel bouncy or unsettled, even over continuous undulations. Overall, the ride quality feels well tuned for daily commuting, comfortable without being overly soft.
Handling
In tight city spaces, the Shine DX feels agile, light, and easy to manoeuvre. U-turns are effortless, and weaving through traffic feels natural. Even at highway speeds, it feels stable – no nervousness there as well. It gets drum brakes at both ends (130mm front, 110mm rear), supported by CBS. They provide adequate stopping power for city speeds. While not designed for aggressive cornering, the Shine 100 DX feels predictable through gentle bends. It encourages smooth, measured riding.

Verdict
The Shine 100 DX feels like a thoughtful upgrade over the standard model. It keeps the same dependable commuter DNA but adds features that genuinely improve everyday usability — an LCD console, tubeless tyres, adjustable rear suspension, and a slightly larger fuel tank. It’s slightly heavier, and the braking feel could be better. If I were choosing between the standard Shine 100 and this, I would pick the DX. It simply feels more complete without losing the simplicity that defines a good commuter.

Competitors
The Shine 100 DX competes with the Hero Splendor Plus, Bajaj Platina 110 and TVS Star City Plus. The Splendor Plus brings unmatched brand trust and resale value. The Platina focuses on comfort and soft suspension tuning. The TVS adds slightly sportier styling and a bassy exhaust note. The Shine 100 DX positions itself as the more feature-rich alternative and also the lightest bike among them.
