Overview

The Yamaha YZF-R2 is a supersport motorcycle that sits above the Yamaha R15 V4 in the brand’s lineup. It was recently launched in India at a starting price of Rs 2.3 lakh (ex-showroom). It gets a new engine, chassis, and more features than the R15 V4. It is available in 3 variants: the YZF-R2, R2 with quickshifter and the YZF-R2 M
Design

The R2 gets a typical supersport design similar to other R-series Yamaha bikes, with clip-on handlebars, split seats and rear-set footpegs to give it a sporty riding position. The bike also has a full fairing, a side-swept exhaust and a new LED projector headlight with sporty LED DRLs on both sides. Yamaha says the design inspiration is from the Yamaha R9, but to a regular person, this might look a bit too similar to the Yamaha R15. The brand could’ve made the headlight portion look a bit more different to ensure it has its own visual identity.
It is available in 5 colour options depending on the variant. The base variant gets Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Grey, the mid variant gets Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue, while the top-spec R2 M is available in a single Metallic Grey colour option.
Features
Convenience Features

The Yamaha R2 comes with a 5-inch TFT console as standard. It gets Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, and call/SMS alerts. Other features include four riding modes: Street, Sport, Rain, plus one customisable mode on all variants. The R2 M also gets adjustable levers along with a Smart Key, which enables keyless ignition.
Safety Features
In terms of safety features, the R2 gets dual-channel ABS as standard, along with traction control.
Riding Posture & Comfort

Rider Comfort
The R2 gets a typical supersport riding position with low clip-on handlebars and rear-set footpegs (yes, they are adjustable too!). This results in a fairly sporty riding position. While it will help when you are doing spirited riding, you can’t expect it to be the most comfortable bike to ride in the city or on the highway for longer durations. The seat is 810mm tall, but the narrow profile should accommodate most riders.
Pillion Comfort
The R2 gets a relatively high pillion seat. Expect it to be just about enough for short rides only.
Engine, Mileage & Performance
Engine

The Yamaha R2 is powered by a brand-new 204cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. The engine makes 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm. For reference, the Yamaha R15 V4 makes 18.4 PS and 14.2 Nm. We expect the engine to be high-revving and have good top-end performance. Interestingly, Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology is missing on this bike.
City & Highway Performance
The bike should offer a good balance of performance and everyday usability in the city. Out on the highway, the added firepower from the bigger engine should make it easier to sustain higher speeds.
Gearbox

The R2 gets a 6-speed gearbox with a bi-directional quickshifter on the mid and top variants. Unlike the R15, this one lets you shift both up and down without using a clutch. Like every other Yamaha gearbox, we expect it to be slick and precise, offering a satisfying shifting experience. The bike also gets a slip-and-assist clutch, which should result in lighter clutch action and prevent rear-wheel locking while downshifting aggressively.
Handling & Ride Quality

Brakes
The R2 gets disc brakes at both ends (282 mm front and 220 mm rear), with an upgraded Nissin 4-piston caliper at the front and a ByBre single-piston caliper at the rear with dual-channel ABS. We expect the bike to have good stopping performance with a predictable lever feel.
Handling

The R2 uses a brand-new steel-tube diamond frame. The R2 and the R2 Quickshifter variants get a 37 mm inverted fork and a linked monoshock suspension, while the R2 M gets an upgraded KYB adjustable fork along with an adjustable monoshock. The bike rides on 17-inch wheels at both ends and gets a 100-section MRF Nylogrip Zapper-FX1 tyre at the front and an MRF RevZ-S 140-section tyre at the rear.
The R2 and R2 Quick Shifter variants weigh 149kg (kerb), while the R2 M is 1kg more. The bike gets a ground clearance of 170mm, and a fuel tank capacity of 12 litres, which should give it a decent tank range considering Yamaha bikes are typically quite fuel efficient.
The R2 should be quite exciting to ride in the city while also being a good handler when attacking corners on the racetrack.
Ride Quality
We expect the bike to be a comfortable motorcycle to use every day. However, due to its supersport nature, don’t expect it to be the most comfortable bike on bad roads, especially when you also factor in the aggressive riding posture.
