FZ X Expert Review
Yamaha FZ X - Introduction
When Yamaha first teased a neo-retro motorcycle for the Indian market, I, like many enthusiasts, hoped we were finally getting the XSR 155. But what we got instead was the FZ-X. It’s not as powerful, not as premium, and certainly not as sporty. Yes, I could go on complaining, but if you look past those issues, the motorcycle has a few things going for it. The FZ X is just a reskinned FZ-Fi underneath, but what makes it tick is the rugged retro styling, laid-back riding experience, and some commuter-friendly features. It’s no speed demon for sure, but it’s made for those who want a little flair on their daily commute.

Design & Build Quality
Design
The FZ X’s design is polarizing to say the least; it follows function over form and takes a few design cues from the Yamaha XSR series sold globally. The round projector headlamp surrounded by an LED DRL is one such example. It gets a sculpted fuel tank with body panels that resemble radiator shrouds and a stubby but minimalistic tail section. The whole design screams rugged, but unlike the XSR, this doesn’t really give any scrambler-like vibe. The bike isn’t going to get you much attention as it blends in with regular commuters pretty well, but the splash of colours does make it stand out a bit.

Colours
You can get the FZ X in two colour options – each one with its own unique personality. First is the Matte Black variant, which looks stealthy and subtle, perfect for those customers who prefer an understated look. Then there’s the Matte Blue colour that’s sporty and elegant.
The paint quality and finish on our test mule were excellent and well-executed. The Matte finish also resists minor scratches and smudges. In my opinion, though, Matte Blue makes a lot of sense, since it makes the bike stand out a bit.

Wheels
There’s no change here as such. It doesn’t get spoked wheels like more off-road-oriented bikes. Instead, it gets 17-inch alloy wheels in a blacked-out finish wrapped in block-pattern MRF Zapper Kurve tires. The design of the alloys is pretty standard and the tyres offer decent grip for light trail or poor road conditions.

Build Quality
I was pretty impressed with the overall fit and finish of the bike. Full points to Yamaha in that regard. The switchgear quality is tactile and feels pretty premium in its segment. Similarly, panel gaps are consistent, and the paint holds up well over time. Nothing felt flimsy or rattly even after regular use in traffic and some mild off-roading.

Features
Safety Features
The latest updates introduce Traction Control – a much-needed feature considering our Indian roads. The fact that Yamaha was able to offer TC at this price point is quite impressive, especially for newer riders or city dwellers. How it works is, the system detects wheel slippage and cuts the engine power at low RPMs to prevent instability.
Also part of the safety set is a dual-Channel ABS system, another upgrade from previous variants that only had single-channel ABS. This enhances braking confidence, especially on wet or uneven city roads.

Convenience Features
The FZ-X is quite feature-packed. It gets full LED lighting, which includes a stylish round LED DRL, projector LED headlamp, and smoked-lens LED turn indicators, which adds some oomph to the bike's aesthetics. There's also an automatic headlamp function that switches on in low-light conditions, adding to the bike’s overall convenience. While the feature list isn’t groundbreaking, Yamaha has done a commendable job of combining practicality and modernity without overwhelming the rider.

The console is a negatively-lit LCD console, which is crisp and easy to read even under bright sunlight. You get basic readouts like speed, fuel level, and trip meters. Yamaha has also included Bluetooth connectivity via its proprietary Y-Connect app, allowing riders to get call and SMS alerts, phone battery level, view battery and oil change reminders, and even last parked location. It’s a neat addition, especially for urban riders who need to stay connected without being distracted.
The information can be viewed on the instrument cluster or directly through the mobile app. The inclusion of a USB charger is a small but smart touch, especially useful for urban riders who rely on their smartphones for navigation or music on the go.
Rider & Pillion Comfort
Rider Ergonomics
Swinging a leg over the FZ-X feels like settling into a cozy armchair. The upright handlebar, mid-set footpegs, and plush seat create a relaxed riding triangle perfect for my 5’10” frame. The 810mm seat height makes it easy to flat-foot at signals, and the foam is soft enough for my 30-km commute without my backside complaining. On a hot day riding through Pune’s traffic, the wide bars gave me leverage to weave past cars, and the mirrors showed me every autorickshaw trying to sneak up.

Pillion Comfort
I took my friend for a ride, and she found the pillion seat comfy for the 20-minute trip. The grab rails are solid, but she noted the footpegs felt a bit high for her 5’7” frame after 45 minutes or so. For short city hops, it’s great; for longer rides, taller pillions might feel uncomfortable.

Engine & Performance
Engine
The FZ-X uses the same 149cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine found in the FZ-FI. It produces 12.4PS and 13.3Nm, and while those numbers aren’t thrilling on paper, the engine is tuned for smooth, linear delivery. It’s happiest cruising at 50–60 kmph, with almost zero vibrations and a calm, composed nature.

City Performance
In city traffic, the FZ-X feels right at home. The low-end torque is adequate, gear shifts are light, and the engine is refined. It can comfortably filter through traffic and doesn’t heat up much even during long waits at signals. Think of it as a chilled-out commuter that never feels stressed, no matter how chaotic your route gets.

Highway Performance
This is where the FZ X is a real letdown. While it can cruise at 70-80kmph without any drama, go beyond that, and the power tapers off quickly. Thanks to this, overtaking on highways requires planning, and the bike really isn’t meant for triple-digit speeds. It will get there eventually, but you’ll be working the engine and throttle harder than you’d want to. In essence, it’s a proper city bike.
Handling & Ride Quality
Underpinnings
The FZ-X uses a telescopic front fork with fork gaiters and a monoshock at the rear. Suspension setup is on the softer side, which works beautifully for soaking up potholes, speed breakers, and undulations—especially in Indian urban conditions.

Brakes
Braking duties are handled by disc brakes at both ends, and the inclusion of single-channel ABS up front gives you peace of mind during panic stops. While braking performance is decent, the rear brake can feel a bit soft. Still, it does the job well under regular riding conditions.

City Handling
With its wide handlebar and light 139kg kerb weight, the FZ-X is incredibly nimble. It handles quick directional changes with ease and always feels in control. Navigating tight lanes, weaving through traffic, or making U-turns—all of it feels effortless.
Highway Handling
On the highway, the bike maintains its line well at moderate speeds. Stability isn’t a concern unless you’re pushing past its comfort zone. Crosswinds and sudden lane changes won’t unsettle it easily, but you won’t find the same planted feel as you would in heavier or more powerful machines.

Cornering
Don’t expect razor-sharp cornering abilities here, but the FZ-X holds its line decently through sweeping turns. The block-pattern tires do limit sporty lean angles, but for casual riding and some fun on twisties, it won’t disappoint.
Verdict
The FZ-X isn’t the XSR 155 I hoped for, but it won my heart as a stylish, reliable commuter. It made my daily rides to work fun, turned heads at my local chai stall, and handled Pune’s chaos like a pro. At ₹1.29 lakh (ex-showroom), it’s not cheap, but the build, safety tech, and retro vibe make it worth it for riders who want personality without hassle. It’s for city slickers who value style as much as function.

Among its rivals, the FZ-X carves out a niche for riders who value style and simplicity over raw numbers. The Pulsar N160 is a clear pick for enthusiasts—it’s quicker, sportier, and more dynamic to ride. The TVS Ronin caters to those seeking a balance between urban ease and weekend touring, while the Hunter 350 leans full cruiser with the charm of a Royal Enfield. Compared to these, the FZ-X is the most approachable. It won’t win many drag races, but it wins where it counts for its audience—comfort, refinement, and everyday practicality in a handsome neo-retro shell.
