Honda Hornet 2.0 - Introduction

When Honda rolled out the latest iteration of the Hornet 2.0 earlier this year, I remember being both curious and a bit skeptical. The 180cc segment has always been a bit of a grey zone: not quite commuter territory, not quite a performance machine either. But after spending a good amount of time with the 2025 Hornet 2.0, I can say that Honda has made notable improvements in all the right areas.
It is priced at Rs 1,45,836 (ex-showroom, Delhi). New graphics, updated features, and OBD-2B compliance are part of the mix, but what really caught my eye, and later my attention on the road, was how Honda has worked to refine the overall riding experience. Is it perfect? No. But it’s more compelling than it has ever been.
Design & Quality
Design

One of the first things that struck me when I walked up to the 2025 Hornet 2.0 was how aggressive and purposeful it looks, especially for a bike that sits in the sub-200cc category. That sharp LED headlamp with integrated DRLs doesn’t just light the road well, it gives the front fascia a serious attitude. And yes, I do think the golden inverted fork seals the deal. They lend a premium visual element that you don’t typically expect at this price point.

The tank extensions are chunky and muscular, and they really make the bike look like it belongs in a segment above. But while the bike looks the part from a distance, a closer inspection does reveal a few budget touches. The plastic panels around the tank, in particular, felt a bit underwhelming to me. They’re slightly flimsy and not quite at par with the rest of the build. Still, it’s a cohesive design. And with the new graphics for 2025, there’s a bit more visual drama now, which I personally like. The bike manages to look premium without trying too hard.
Colours

Honda is offering four new colour options this time around: Pearl Igneous Black, Radiant Red Metallic, Athletic Blue Metallic, and Matt Axis Gray Metallic. I had a chance to check out the Athletic Blue Metallic, its launch colour, and it looks striking under natural light. The contrast between the blue and the golden fork really works. I’d be hard-pressed to pick between the Radiant Red Metallic and this one though, since both have strong road presence.
Wheels

The Hornet rides on ten-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends. These are shod with a 110-section tyre at the front and a 140-section at the rear. I’ve ridden bikes that try to go overly wide on tyres just for aesthetics, but I felt this setup is just right, offering a nice balance of agility and grip that suits the Hornet’s personality well, but more on that later.
Quality

Honda’s fit and finish is usually a strong suit, and for the most part, the Hornet upholds that reputation. Paint finish is deep and glossy, the switchgear feels tactile, and panel gaps are minimal. That said, those cheap-feeling black plastics on the tank extensions do let the side down. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s one of those things that stood out to me while living with the bike.
Features & Practicality
Safety Features

Now here’s a section where the Hornet has taken a step up. I was pleasantly surprised to find dual-channel ABS and switchable traction control in this segment. Riding through patchy city roads and occasional gravel, it was reassuring to know these systems had my back. I didn’t find the traction control overly intrusive either — it kicked in only when I pushed the rear just a tad too far on loose surfaces.
Convenience Features

The 4.2-inch TFT console is a welcome addition. It’s crisp, easy to read even in daylight, and packed with useful info. I synced it up with Honda’s RoadSync app, and once I figured out the pairing process, the turn-by-turn navigation and call/SMS alerts worked well. Listening to music while riding isn’t something we’d ever recommend, but if that’s the way you roll, you now have full music playback controls on longer rides at your fingertips. There’s also a USB Type-C charging port, a godsend for someone like me who routinely forgets to charge their phone before a ride. Plus, a hazard light switch adds that extra layer of practicality. Honda has nailed the essentials here.
Rider & Pillion Comfort
Rider Comfort

Comfort is often where bikes in this category try to cut corners, but Honda has done a decent job here. I found the riding posture to be spot-on for daily commutes. It’s upright enough to be comfortable, but still forward-leaning enough to feel connected. The seat is wide and well-padded, and during a couple of 40-50km stints, I didn’t feel the need to take frequent breaks. One detail I appreciated was the contouring of the seat. It makes it easier for shorter riders (I stand 5 feet 6 inches) to flat-foot the bike at a standstill, which boosts confidence in urban traffic. That’s a small thing that makes a big difference.
Pillion Comfort

Now here’s where the Hornet starts to lose some ground. I took a friend along for a spin, and while the pillion seat is reasonably spacious, it didn’t isolate them from road imperfections very well. Over sharper bumps, my pillion clearly felt more of the impact than I did. It’s manageable for short trips, but if you’re frequently riding two-up, this could be a consideration.
Underpinnings

Honda has retained the same chassis and suspension setup from the previous model: a golden inverted fork up front and a monoshock at the rear. The bike has a kerb weight of 142kg, ground clearance of 168mm, and a seat height of 790mm. On paper, that’s a well-balanced set of figures, and on the road, it translates to a friendly, approachable ride.
Ride Quality

Ride quality is where the Hornet balances commuter sensibilities with a hint of sportiness. The suspension is tuned on the softer side, which means bumps, potholes, and speed breakers don’t send a jolt through your spine. Even at higher speeds, the setup remains composed. I rode over a particularly broken patch near my office, and the bike soaked it up without getting unsettled.
Engine & Performance
Engine

At the core of the Hornet 2.0 sits a 184.4cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine. It puts out 17PS at 8,500rpm and 15.7Nm at 6,000rpm. Yes, there’s been a minor drop in figures compared to the previous iteration, but I honestly didn’t notice any difference in day-to-day use. What I did notice, however, was the engine’s refined nature. It’s not a rev-happy screamer, but it delivers torque in a very linear, predictable way, perfect for someone like me who values usability over raw performance in city riding.
City Performance

In traffic, the Hornet really shines. The throttle response is clean, the gearing is spot-on for low-speed manoeuvers, and that assist-and-slipper clutch is a game-changer during rush-hour stop-go traffic. Gear shifts are smooth, and the clutch lever is light enough that your left hand won’t hate you at the end of a long commute. I had no trouble keeping up with traffic, weaving through narrow gaps, and pulling off the occasional overtake. The powerband is accessible and easy to modulate, something newer riders will appreciate, but experienced riders won’t find boring either.
Highway Performance

On the highway, things are a bit more nuanced. At 85kmph, the bike feels composed and right in its element. But push past 6,500rpm, and vibrations start to creep into the bars and pegs. I cruised at 100kmph for a stretch, and while the bike held that speed without protest, it didn’t feel particularly relaxed. I kept wishing for a 6th gear all the time, though. Not for higher top-end speed, but just to bring those revs down and make long-distance rides more comfortable. It’s not a deal-breaker, but definitely a missed opportunity.
Gearbox

The five-speed gearbox is mated to a slipper clutch, and the combo works beautifully. Downshifts are smooth and drama-free even when I got a little aggressive with the throttle. The gearing is well-spaced, and I never found myself hunting for the right gear, whether in city traffic or cruising. But, again, a sixth gear would have been a welcome addition.
Mileage / Range

Fuel efficiency is where the Hornet really surprised me. I clocked 57.35kmpl in the city and around 55.11kmpl on the highway. Those numbers aren’t just good for the class; they’re great. With a 12-litre fuel tank, I was comfortably seeing upwards of 600 km per tank if I stayed light on the throttle.
Ride Quality & Handling
Underpinnings

Honda has retained the same chassis and suspension setup from the previous model: a golden inverted fork up front and a monoshock at the rear. The bike has a kerb weight of 142kg, ground clearance of 168mm, and a seat height of 790mm. On paper, that’s a well-balanced set of figures, and on the road, it translates to a friendly, approachable ride.
With 17-inch alloy wheels and a 110-section front tyre and a 140-section rear tyre, the Hornet offers a planted and agile feel. Braking is managed by a 276mm disc at the front and a 220mm disc at the rear, and dual-channel ABS comes standard.
Brakes

Brake performance is adequate but not exceptional. The front disc has decent bite, and stopping distances are reasonable, but the lever feel is on the softer side. It’s one of those systems where you need to pull harder than you’d expect to get maximum stopping power. That said, the ABS kicks in predictably and doesn’t feel intrusive.
City Handling

In urban conditions, the Hornet 2.0 is an absolute joy. It feels nimble, eager to flick through traffic, and light on its feet. I genuinely enjoyed darting through tight spaces and taking quick u-turns. It’s the kind of agility that makes you want to take the long way home.
Highway Handling

At higher speeds, the Hornet feels planted and stable. Lane changes are smooth, and there’s no nervousness even when overtaking buses or trucks. Crosswinds do affect it a little due to its lightweight nature, but never enough to feel unsafe.
Cornering

I took the Hornet through some twisty backroads outside the city, and I came away impressed. It’s no sportbike, but it’s happy to lean in and hold a line. The tyres grip well enough, and the chassis gives you the confidence to push a little harder than you’d expect from a commuter.

Verdict
Verdict

After spending a few days with the 2025 Honda Hornet 2.0, I came away with a sense of appreciation. It’s not a bike that overwhelms you with power or features, but it gets the fundamentals right. It’s refined, efficient, easy to live with, and now comes with a layer of tech and safety that makes it stand out in the sub-200cc crowd. If you’re looking for a bike that offers a balance between city usability and weekend fun, without going all-out into the 200cc segment, this is a sweet spot. Would I recommend it over the Apache 200 4V? That depends on what you want more, excitement or balance.
Variants

The Hornet 2.0 is available in a single Standard variant at all Honda RedWing and BigWing dealerships across India.
Competitors

The Hornet 2.0’s most direct competitor is the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, which offers a more engaging engine and stronger feature set. Then there’s the Yamaha MT-15 V2, with its liquid-cooled engine and sporty dynamics, and the Bajaj Pulsar NS200, which also brings higher performance to the table. All are worth a look depending on your priorities, and the Hornet 2.0 has an undeniably uphill task against these worthy contenders for your wallet.
