    KTM 160 Duke - Introduction

The KTM 160 Duke is the newest entry-level model in the KTM family. It is targeted at college students who are looking for a sporty streetfighter for daily commutes and weekend fun. The bike has the same design as the KTM 200 Duke, and looks like a higher capacity model at first glance. It is also powered by a re-bored version of the KTM 200 Duke’s engine, and is currently the most powerful model in the 150-160cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder streetfighter segment. I recently had the chance to spend some time with this bike, and here’s a detailed first ride review of its performance.

The bike was launched on August 11, and here's everything you need to know

    KTM 160 Duke Review

    4.0
    Design & Quality

    KTM 160 Duke: Design

The KTM 160 Duke has a similar design as the current KTM 200 Duke, and shares a few elements with the higher capacity 790 Duke. I personally think going with the Duke 200 design was a really good idea, instead of the 3rd-Gen one. This comes down to how the sharp looking headlight and aggressive tank extensions gives the bike a proper big bike feel. The 3rd Gen design is good, but it just makes the bike look a bit too small. Overall, KTM has managed to make this bike look like a proper Duke, and is something I really liked.

    KTM 160 Duke: Colours

The KTM 160 Duke is offered in 3 colour schemes: Electronic Orange, Atlantic Blue and the Silver Metallic Matt. Out of these colours, the electronic orange is the flashiest one and offers that signature KTM orange finish on the tank extensions and tail-section. The Silver Metallic Matt on the other hand is a more subtle colour scheme, offering a grey finish on the tank extensions. But in my opinion, the Atlantic Blue comes off as an ideal middle-ground between the two, offering a good mix of both flashiness and subtlety.

    KTM 160 Duke: Build Quality

The build quality on the 160 Duke is very good, there are no exposed wiring or uneven panels as such. The build-quality is similar to the one on the KTM 200 Duke, and the bike does feel like a premium offering. KTM has also gone a lot further here, and offered the same 4-way switch gear which we have seen on the KTM 390 Duke. The switch gear is very tactile, and feels very nice to use.

    3.5
    Features & Practicality

    KTM 160 Duke: Convenience Features

The KTM 160 Duke comes with a 5-inch TFT console, same as the KTM 200 Duke, and an LCD console in the base variant with an inbuilt dot-matrix inset. Both consoles offers speed, fuel-level, time, odometer and tachometer readings. The one we got for review was the LCD variant. It has a clean and easy to read layout. It also offers good visibility under most lighting conditions. While we were reviewing the bike, it was raining heavily so we couldn’t test out the visibility under harsh sunlight.

Both consoles also offers smartphone connectivity and related features such as turn-by-turn navigation, call alerts and also the ability to accept/reject calls.

    KTM 160 Duke: Safety Features

The 160 Duke gets dual-channel ABS as standard, and this does help in preventing loss of control under emergency braking. The brand has also offered switchable ABS, allowing the riders to switch off ABS at the rear. This is not something which adds to the bike’s safety quotient but does make it possible for riders to do controlled slides and have some fun.

Here's a detailed story explaining the feature differences between the KTM 160 Duke and the 200 Duke

    4.0
    Rider & Pillion Comfort

    KTM 160 Duke: Riding Comfort

The KTM 160 Duke offers the rider a relatively upright riding position, which makes it comfortable for commuting. The bike has a long and slightly raised handlebar, which is easy to hold on to without having to worry about wrist pain. The footpegs are a bit rear set, and offer a more sporty lower body posture.

That said, the KTM 160 Duke does bring a bit of versatility in terms of riding ergonomics. The long seat makes it easy to go for a more relaxed riding posture or move a bit back for a more sporty and committed riding posture for spirited riding.

    KTM 160 Duke: Pillion Comfort

The pillion seat is quite spacious and comfortable like that on the KTM 200 Duke, and offers enough room for the pillion rider. The seat cushioning is also quite good, and can easily accommodate city rides.

    4.0
    Engine & Performance

    KTM 160 Duke: Engine

Powering the KTM 160 Duke is a new 164.2cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, producing 19PS at 9,500rpm and 15.5Nm at 7,500rpm. The engine is derived from the Duke 200’s engine and it manages to capture that rev happy nature which we associate with KTM bikes very well. The engine is the most powerful in the 150-160cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder segment, producing 0.6PS and 1.4Nm more than its main rival, the Yamaha MT-15.

    KTM 160 Duke: City Performance

The KTM 160 Duke is primarily meant for city commutes, and the bike fulfills this role very well. The engine doesn’t have much of a low-end and feels quite lazy below 4,000rpm. But as the engine revs fast, it is easy to get it above 4,000rpm really quick, bringing in that much needed torque boost. The engine is also well refined and there are very few vibrations present, except for a minor buzz at the footpegs which becomes noticeable once the engine revs past 7,000rpm. Overall, the KTM 160 Duke is quite fun to ride, but there’s this feeling that the bike just wants to be revved to redline and doesn’t enjoy laid-backed and relaxed riding.

    KTM 160 Duke: Highway Performance

The KTM 160 Duke is quite enthusiastic and can easily handle highway speeds of 80kmph without feeling stressed. The only noticeable vibrations present is the buzzing on the footpeg present above 7,000rpm. But during my time with the bike, I didn’t feel it much as I was wearing thick riding boots. That said, the vibrations aren’t annoying, even when you’re riding in regular shoes, and it mostly adds character to the bike more than anything.

    KTM 160 Duke: Mileage

KTM claims that the 160 Duke is able to offer a mileage of 40kmpl. For a bike which is meant to be a daily-commuter, the mileage is good and will help keep the costs in check. That said, we are waiting to get our hands on the bike to conduct a mileage test of our own to check how much mileage it is able to offer in real world testing conditions.

    4.0
    Ride Quality & Handling

    KTM 160 Duke: Handling

The 160 Duke is quite an agile and nimble motorcycle, and feels very light on its feet. Moving the bike in the parking lot is effortless and the weight is not felt at all. While on the move, the bike feels really easy to handle, and tips into turns quickly and effortlessly. To achieve this, the brand has used lighter wheels, similar to the ones used on the KTM 250 and 390 Duke. Along with this, the bike also gets hollow axles and lastly, the rake angle has been made sharper by 0.5 degrees compared to the KTM 200 Duke. The changes have gone a long way in making this a very fun and engaging bike to ride.

    KTM 160 Duke: Tyres

The MRF Zapper tyres which are offered as standard, do not inspire enough confidence in my opinion. During the review, I was riding the bike in heavy Mumbai rain, and it felt like I had to be careful not to push it too much.

The tyres take away from the bike’s potential and I wished KTM had offered slightly better tyres so we could enjoy the bike to the fullest. If you are someone who plans on buying the KTM 160 Duke, my first suggestion would be getting better tyres.

    KTM 160 Duke: Brakes

Braking performance is another area where the bike could have been better. The brakes do offer decent stopping power and feel from the lever. But the front brake doesn’t have the strong initial braking force which we expected, and this doesn’t inspire the confidence which we hoped for when riding at higher speeds.

I think changing the stock organic brake pads to ceramic pads or sintered brake pads could be a good change for better performance. The rear brake on the other hand doesn’t offer much feel, and it is hard to make out how much force has to be applied to get the bike to slow down.

    Ride Comfort (4/5)

    KTM 160 Duke: Ride Quality

The suspension on the 160 Duke is well tuned and offers a balanced riding experience across various different conditions. It is easily able to handle most of the bumps and potholes that one would encounter on the road. While riding at higher speeds, the bike also feels quite stable, so the suspension does strike a good balance between city and highway riding. Overall, the tuning has been one of the main highlights of this bike for me personally, and I really liked it.

    4.0
    Verdict

The KTM 160 Duke is the most powerful streetfighter in its segment, and it manages to tick all the right boxes in my opinion. The bike offers enough power and performance to keep one engaged, and the amazing handling also makes it a good platform for beginner riders.

There are more powerful offerings at the same price range, but KTM has aimed the bike at college students and for this cohort, having a good mileage is an important criteria. In this case, the claimed mileage of 40kmpl is quite good. If you are someone who is looking for a sporty 160cc streetfighter, which can offer good levels of excitement while also being easy on the pocket, then the Duke 160 is the bike for you.

KTM India recently launched a new variant of the 160 Duke with a TFT console, check out how much more it costs than the base LCD console variant.

A Ride That Matches My Pace
Because I wanted to express myself through my ride. I do not like bland bikes. I wanted loud style, sharp performance, something I had notice as soon as I walk out of home. The KTM 160 Duke’s design, sound, reputation made me feel I will own something noteworthy. So I chose it as a reflection of my taste. Riding has been story of small wins. First time I leaned it into a tight hairpin, then pushed it on a highway stretch. It responds well. Commuting feels less boring. I feel involved. I notice improvements in my own riding. The bike surprises me when I think I have seen all it can do. It is reliable, spirited, alive. Yes, really. If you want connection, not just speed, this delivers. It makes mornings better, traffic less troublesome. Friends who ride with me love it. If you are okay with modest wind blast and firm ride over perfect insulation it is ideal. It gives personality, fun, spirit. I strongly recommend it.

      Fun-Sized Power, Full-Sized Grin
I wanted a bike that matched my fast paced life: light, quick, fun. My work calls and I need to maneuver traffic, stop start lights, sometimes highways. The KTM 160 Duke looked like it could handle all. Styling also mattered: aggressive look, sharp features, strong colour decals. That mix led me to pick it. The ride has been consistently satisfying. Acceleration is strong from low rpm it does not feel sluggish. Handling is precise. I approach corners better now. Urban rides feel less tiring. On rough roads it shakes a bit but trade off for agility is okay. Even with daily use it feels fresh. Yes. For people who want a bike that is exciting first, practical second, this is perfect. If your rides are mostly freeway, maybe consider wind protection. But for city, twisty roads, weekend fun, you get a lot. It keeps you engaged. I often tell anyone who listens: this bike gives adrenaline and joy without huge cost.

      Bold Design, Nimble Ride
Because I saw friends ride it and they had smiles I could not ignore. I heard how nimble it was how it attacked corners. I wanted that feeling. I liked how light it felt when parked, like you could manage it easily. So I decided: I want that joy that grin on face ride. KTM 160 Duke gave me hope for that. It has been joyful. I look forward to riding even just small errands. I feel connected to bike when I lean, when I brake, when I slide throttle. Its sound, its vibration in right amounts, make it alive. Highway riding challenges the wind but once I settle it is steady. I love how it makes the ordinary rides special. Yes, I had tell many to try it. It is addictively fun. Once you ride this you might judge other bikes harshly. It does not need to be perfect to be loved. For daily rider who loves sporty touch or weekend twisties it suits. If you want hardcore touring other options exist but this is one of the best all round sporty street bikes.

I picked it because I read about its lightweight trellis frame and sharp turn in. I test rode it felt how quickly it changes direction. That feedback made me click. It felt like a bike you could master, use fully, enjoy. I wanted engagement not just metal. The KTM 160 Duke seemed made for that. Riding has been engaging daily. It rewards precise riding. Brakes feel lively, throttle control is good. I learn new limits every ride. Sometimes I wish for more luggage options or more wind protection but those are compromises. On whole it is made me more skilled more happy on two wheels. Yes, wholeheartedly. It is a bike that teaches, excites, rewards. If you like feedback sharpening your riding it helps you grow. If you just want relaxed cruising maybe less appeal. But for those who ride with intention this is one of the best. I tell people it is more than a bike it is an experience.

      Style Meets Street Smarts
Because I needed something lightweight to weave traffic safely. My old bike felt bulky, slow in response. Ducati style bikes were too expensive. The KTM 160 Duke seemed just right: light frame, strong brakes, quick steering. I saw myself riding to work, weekends and this seemed like the one that could handle all that. My experience has been exciting. It is small enough to feel nimble but powerful enough to feel alive. I enjoy cornering it pivots nicely. City rides are fun because I can dart through gaps. Over bumps there is some harshness but manageable. I am more confident now traffic is less stress. Yes I had recommend it to riders who want agility. If you like sporty look, sharp brakes, good handling, this bike gives. Might not be comfy for long touring or highway blast non stop but you can do decent trips. For daily rides it is excellent. It makes riding joyful.

      Daily Ride, Weekend Thrill
I wanted something sporty but affordable. The KTM 160 Duke promised performance without breaking the bank. I saw ads, read forums, saw people praising its engine and handling. It seemed like a good deal: you get excitement, you get style, you get reliability. For what I could spend this felt like maximum fun. It has been thrilling. Every ride feels energetic. Starting from standstill, pulling through city gears it responds. On highways it holds speed, though wind starts to push. Suspension is firm, so you feel road texture but not fatiguing. The exhaust note is sharp. Overall it gives me strong satisfaction. Yes very much. For someone who wants a sporty bike without premium price, this fits. It gives value: performance, looks, control. If your rides are short or mid distance, you will love it. If you need big comfort maybe look elsewhere but for most riders this is a strong recommendation.

      Performance That Fits the Streets
Because I wanted something that turns the heads. The KTM 160 Duke looked futuristic, aggressive with those sharp lines and orange accents. I liked that it had tech ish bits: LED, digital dash, styling. I did not want just function I wanted form and fun. It felt like a reward rather than just transport. Riding has felt alive. It surprises me when I open throttle, the torque is usable even in low revs. The chassis stays planted when I push through curves. I feel in control. There are small jerks if I rush gear shifts but overall it is composed. It is made me more confident, happier on every ride. Yes I’ll recommend it. It is for someone who wants fun, sharp handling, looks and decent performance. Not perfect for long distance comfort but for city blasts or twisty backroads it shines. Friends ask me about it I have taken them as passenger and they love it. It is a bike you enjoy not just use.

      Sharp Looks, Sharper Handling
I chose it after riding a basic commuter. I wanted more punch, more attitude. The KTM 160 Duke had that naked sporty vibe, sharp edges, big tank decals. It looked mean, sounded mean. I wanted something that felt like a toy and machine both. That mix of fun and performance is why I bought it. The experience has been electric. It is playful, zippy. Rolling off red lights feels satisfying. Leaning into bends feels safe and fun. Sometimes on highway there is wind buffeting and long rides cost a bit but those moments are rare. Overall it delivers smiles every time I twist the throttle. Yes I would. If you value style, quick handling and want thrills every ride this is for you. If you want full touring comfort maybe not but for urban riding and weekend blasts it excels. It makes me excited to ride every morning. I tell many people it is one of the best in its class.

      Lightweight Punch for City Chaos
Because I was tired of heavy bikes that struggle in stop start traffic. I wanted something light, sharp and easy to handle. The 160 Duke stood out: minimal bulk, aggressive lines, big LED headlight. It promised performance in urban chaos. That made me choose it I saw it as the one bike I could manage easily yet enjoy daily. So far the ride has shocked me in a good way. The engine revs clean, pull is strong. Clutch is smooth, gears are precise. I used to avoid rough roads, now I ride them less fear. The seat comfort is okay for medium rides and the wind blast at higher speeds is there but that is part of the thrill. Definitely yes. I would tell someone: if you like bikes that respond instantly that feel alive get this. It is not for touring comfort but for daily fun or spirited riding it shines. Budget friendly, reliable, exciting. It would not carry two heavy people long distance but for one rider it delivers.

      Urban Agility, Instant Fun
I wanted a nimble street bike that carves corners easily. The KTM 160 Duke’s sharp design, light weight and sporty stance caught my eye. I saw others struggle in tight city turns but this felt like it would dance through traffic. That promise of agility and punch is why I picked it. Riding has been super fun. Quick throttle response lets me zip past slow traffic. The brakes bite well and suspension handles rough patches without too much bounce. I feel confident leaning into corners. Even on longer rides it stays composed. It makes me feel like I am riding not just commuting. Yes, absolutely. If you ride in the city and love sporty feel, this is one of the best. It is strong enough for highway bursts, light enough for daily traffic. Keeps you engaged. For someone who wants excitement without needing a motorway monster this bike is great. I had tell friends who want fun and control.
