    Yamaha R2 Variants

The 200cc segment in India just got a new entrant, the Yamaha YZF-R2. It was just launched, with prices starting from Rs 2,30,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Built on a completely new platform, the R2 is positioned above the popular Yamaha R15 V4. Yamaha is offering the bike in three distinct variants: Base, Base with quickshifter, and the top-spec YZF-R2 M. The interesting part? All three share the exact same engine and chassis but there are a few hardware and feature differences. Here’s everything you need to know

    New YZF-R2 Variants: What's Different?

Yamaha's strategy with the YZF-R2 is to offer a single high-performance base and let buyers choose their level of convenience and track-readiness. The price walk across the lineup is quite straightforward, with each step up adding useful features:

    Rs 2,30,500

This one comes with darker colours, along with black wheels

    YZF-R2 with Quick Shifter

    YZF-R2M

    Rs 2,53,000

Adds on adjustable suspension and levers, Smart Key, exclusive colour with premium finishes

The base variant comes in Dark Bluish Grey and Metallic Black colours. We’ve explained all you need to know about the Yamaha R2 base variant here.

    Yamaha R2M

On the other hand, the mid-spec version comes in Racing Blue and Matte White Pearl. The range-topping M variant gets only one exclusive colour: Metallic Gray. That said, most of the colours look a bit too similar to the R15, and the design similarity doesn’t help either. As for more information about the features exclusive to the M variant, read our explainer here.

    What Stays The Same

Every R2 gets the full-fat experience where it counts: performance. The powertrain is an all-new 200cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing a segment-leading 26.5PS and 19.1Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox featuring an assist & slipper clutch as standard.

    Yamaha R2 Engine

All three variants are built on a steel tube diamond frame, suspended by a 37mm USD fork and a linked-type monocross rear shock. Brakes include 282mm front disc and a 220mm rear disc, with dual-channel ABS being standard fitment. Furthermore, every variant includes a comprehensive electronics suite: traction control, ride-by-wire throttle with three modes (Street, Sport, Rain and extra Custom mode). Even the 5-inch full-colour TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation is standard on all the models.

    BikeDekho's Verdict

Choosing the right YZF-R2 variant depends on your budget and riding needs. The Base is the best value, offering the same core performance, safety electronics and premium TFT display as the higher variants. The Base with quickshifter is the sweet spot, adding a bi-directional quickshifter for just Rs 9,000 more. This is something we’d really recommend (if you don’t want to splurge on the top variant) as it makes the riding experience all the more joyful.

The top-spec R2M is best suited to track-focused riders, with adjustable suspension and levers, while its smart key adds a bit of an extra convenience for everyday use.
