Classic 650 Expert Review
Royal Enfield Classic 650 Review: Best of the 650s!
The Classic 650 is easily one of the best looking Royal Enfield motorcycles ever which made it the dream bike of many people across the globe. Priced from Rs 3.37 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant, the Classic 650 is more affordable than the Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650 on which it is based. It is considered the spiritual successor of the Classic 500 and in the Indian market it competes with the BSA Gold Star 650.
Design
-
The Classic 650 retains the iconic look of the Classic 350 with its tear-drop shaped metal tank, round headlight and metal body panels
-
Our review bike was in the beautiful chrome paint scheme which is ,my personal favourite
-
The rear section looks quite good with a beautifully designed tail light accompanied by a fat rear tyre and twin pea-shooter exhaust pipes
-
Overall in my opinion, the Classic 650 looks slightly better than both, the Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650
Features
-
The Classic 650 gets a LED headlight which provides decent illumination while riding in the night
-
It also gets the tripper navigation pod as standard which allows for smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth along with turn-by-turn navigation and SMS alerts
-
This is quite an essential feature for daily commutes and long trips
Riding Posture & Comfort
-
The Classic 650 gets a relaxed riding position thanks to its wide handle bar and forward set footpegs
-
It is a comfortable motorcycle for both shot and tall riders and I found the seat to be quite accommodating for 5’9 frame
-
With an 800mm seat height, it is quite easy to manage this motorcycle with both the front and rear seats being really comfortable for rider and pillion, respectively
-
With a weight of 243kg (curb weight), it is the heaviest Royal Enfield motorcycle on sale. This 243kg behemoth is certainly not as easy to ride as a scooter
- However, despite its high kerb weight, getting it up on the centre stand is still pretty effortless
Engine, Mileage & Performance
-
It gets the same tried and tested 650 parallel-twin motor as other Royal Enfields
Engine |

Transmission |

6-Speed |

-
The engine offers a great blend of refinement and character with its effortless power delivery
-
The mid-range of this engine is quite strong and it comfortably rides in lower speeds and higher gears
-
It happily sits at 100 to 120kmph out on the highway with good amount of grunt left to do easy overtakes
-
And the exhaust note makes it very engaging to ride
Handling & Ride Quality
-
The Classic 650 handles quite well despite its higher kerb weight and it was quite fun to ride around the ghat sections
-
The suspension setup is not the best but still better than the Super Meteor 650
-
It uses a 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel configuration with MRF tyres which provide decent grip
-
The braking performance is quite good with a big 320mm front and 300mm rear disc brake setup for the weight and it also gets dual-channel ABS
-
Overall, the ride quality is quite good for both city commutes and highway rides
Should You Buy The Royal Enfield Classic 650?
-
For the price the Classic 650 offers a powerful motor with extreme refinement and strong power delivery
-
It is also quite comfortable to ride and the ride quality itself is also not bad
-
For anyone who wants an easy going and beautiful looking retro cruiser motorcycle with great quality levels than the Royal Enfield Classic 650 makes a lot of sense
Royal Enfield Classic 650 Pros and Cons
Things We Like
- Looks Classic! It's a charming looking motorcycle with a lot of muscle and presence.
- The engine is refined and offers effortless acceleration.
- The bike feels relaxed cruising at 100-120kmph on the highway.
Things We Don't Like
- At 243Kg - it's a heavy motorcycle and moving it around in the parking lot is difficult.
- The suspension setup is more focused on stability, and hence comfort is not ideal for broken roads.
- There are vibrations from the engine when pushed hard can be felt on the fuel tank and foot pegs.
