Austrian motorcycle maker, KTM has confirmed the arrival of a twin-cylinder platform sometime in 2017. The first motorcycle based on the platform will be an 890cc streetfighter which will be followed by multiple offerings in various categories. Earlier, the bike was spied testing in Spain. With the launch of the 890 Duke, KTM will lock horns with the Ducati Monster 821 and the Kawasaki Z800. The global launch of the Duke 890 is slated around late 2017 and could make its Indian debut by mid-2018.

Recently, the Austrian manufacturer revealed its plans of bringing twin-cylinder engines for their next-gen models in the annual investor report. Though the report does not offer much information, the spy-shots of the parallel-twin 890 Duke hint that it will be the first motorcycle to employ this platform. Similar to V-twin and single-cylinder engines, we believe that the new platform will be used in smaller capacity models as well.

Presently, most of the automakers utilise a single platform in multiple models. This not only saves the development cost but also reduces the cost of production due to the shared components in various models.

Moreover, the company is planning to enter adventure touring segment with the launch of new 390 Adventure to rival the Royal Enfield Himalayan. Inspired by the KTM 1190 Adventure, the younger sibling might get both the engine platforms in India.
