Honda has recently unveiled the 2022 iteration of its neo-retro scooter, called the Tapas, in China. Priced at 8,280 Yuan, equivalent to Rs 96,600, it is not a very expensive scooter. Here’s a closer look at this scooter.

At first glance, the scooter showcases retro design elements fused with the latest functional hardware. Case in point, the rounded apron and fender complement the squared-off LED headlight rather nicely. Additionally, the body-coloured round mirrors and chrome grab rail with an integrated tail rack also scream retro.

The huge headlight, integrated into the fascia with chrome borders and an LED DRL showcase the perfect fusion of old school and modern elements. This is accentuated by the turn indicators on each side, which also receive chrome borders.

The speedometer console reveals no bluetooth connectivity or digital readouts. It comprises a simple analog display that feels more outdated than retro in this day and age.

The rear section perhaps is the most beautiful part of the scooter. A huge tail light cluster also houses unique turn indicators with chrome accents. A lovely retro design touch would be the black pinstripe along the lower body of the scooter.

Powered by a 102cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine developing 4.75PS and 7.5Nm, which feels quite low by modern scooter standards.

The Tapas gets a telescopic suspension at the front and a monoshock at the rear. Braking duties are done by a front disc and rear drum setup. It also gets a rather beefy looking exhaust.

A chunky ribbed leather seat only further compliments the overall retro aesthetic of the scooter. Seat height is 735mm, which should make it easy to hop on and off, even for short riders.

The scooter gets a USB charging socket along with a small cubbyhole to store your phone at the front.

While the underseat storage space isn’t the biggest out there, it is still enough to store a half face helmet. It also gets a foldable rear rack to mount bags. Honda claims a mileage of 45 kmpl, and has equipped the Tapas with a 5.7-litre fuel tank.

The scooter only weighs a meagre 95 kg, which should make it nimble enough to zip through the urban jungle. While it is unlikely the Tapas would find its way to our shores at all, if you’re looking for a retro scooter in our market, you should find the Vespa SXL and Vespa VXL right up your alley.
