Hero Xtreme 200R Bike Ambulance To Fight Against Coronavirus

The Hero Group has pledged Rs 100 crore to combat the coronavirus pandemic in India. Hero says half of it will be contributed to the PM Cares fund and the remaining half will be used for other relief efforts. The Hero Xtreme 200R ambulance gets a sidecar modified to accommodate a bed.  It also gets sirens, a side box, oxygen cylinder, fire extinguisher and a Public Address (PA) system.

Hero MotoCorp has modified the humble Xtreme 200R into a mobile ambulance as a part of its contribution towards the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The company says that 60 of these motorcycles will be donated to the health departments in rural areas of different states. These can be put into action to reach remote areas where it is difficult for a full-sized ambulance to access. And more recently, in October 13, the company donated four of these to the Department of Health and Family Welfare in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

The Hero Xtreme 200R bike ambulance comes with a sidecar with an integrated bed that’s large enough to accommodate an adult. The headrest portion of the bed is partly covered with a canopy and it gets LED warning lights on all sides. There’s a compartment just under the bed which houses a first aid kit and tool box. The sidecar is mounted on a full-sized 17-inch alloy wheel with twin shock absorbers for better dynamics. The motorcycle is also equipped with an oxygen cylinder and a side pannier box, likely to house other crucial medical equipment. There’s additional equipment retrofitted on the handlebar clamp to control the siren and the Public Address (PA) system.

These bikes are likely to be BS4-compliant as they do not seem to feature the additional catalytic converter in the exhaust bend pipe. The BS4 Hero Xtreme 200R is powered by a 199.6cc carburetted single-cylinder air-cooled motor that churns out 18.4PS at 8000rpm and 17.1Nm at 6500rpm. The motor works alongside a 5-speed transmission. Suspension bits include a 37mm telescopic front fork and a 7-step preload adjustable monoshock. Brakes include discs on both ends.

This isn’t the first time the country has witnessed the use of a bike ambulance. Back in 2015, the Karnataka Government received 30 Bajaj Avenger Cruise 220 modified into bike ambulances. However, they were designed to be first-response vehicles as they lacked a sidecar to carry patients.
