KTM entered the Indian two-wheeler market in 2012 in a joint-venture between the Austrian brand and Bajaj Auto, with the KTM 200 Duke being the brand’s first bike in the country. Bajaj Auto is now the majority shareholder (75%) of the brand, making it the owner of the Austrian brand and its worldwide operations.
KTM’s bikes are known for their explosive performance and great handling characteristics, and that’s reflected by its lineup of bikes, which mainly consists of streetfighters, ADVs, off-roaders and supersport bikes. In India, their bikes are manufactured at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant, located near Pune, Maharashtra.
KTM Identity & Tag Line
KTM’s current brand tagline is ‘Ready To Race’, reflecting the brand’s focus on performance bikes.
Sharing the same ethos as its tagline, the brand’s first bike, the 200 Duke and later on, the 390 Duke are considered vital in the Indian two-wheeler market’s history for broadening the Indian consumers’ mindset towards sub-400cc performance bikes. These bikes can be largely attributed to contributing to the surging demand among Indian consumers for high-performance bikes. The 250 and 390 Adventure bikes are important bikes in the ADV segment of the country because of their contributions to the rise in popularity of such bikes. These bikes have helped KTM cement its brand identity of being the first name in everybody’s mind upon hearing the words “performance bikes”.
Who Should Buy KTM Bikes?
If you have a young son or daughter that is enthusiastic about getting into off-road riding, then the 50 SX, 85 SX and the 65 SX are good options to consider as they offer manageable power delivery and are very lightweight to manoeuvre. The 160 Duke is perfect for someone who is a beginner when it comes to performance bikes and wants a bike that offers spirited performance that’s usable in the city. The 200 Duke offers much more power than the 160 Duke and its agile handling characteristics makes it fun to weave in and out of traffic. The RC 200 is perfect for someone who wants to have the supersport experience but is not used to bigger capacity engines yet.
The 250 Duke offers good tractability for usability in the city and the strong performance towards the upper levels of the rev range combined with the sharp handling dynamics makes it a hoot to ride in the twisties. The 250 Adventure is a great entry point for someone who wants to get into adventure riding. For someone who is a hardcore off-road rider, then the 250 SX-F, 350 EXC-F Six Days and the 450 SX-F are good options to consider.
If you are looking for a bike that offers manic performance that’s enough for Indian conditions and a bike that can tackle racetracks as well, then the KTM 390 Duke is a great option to consider. It is tractable at low speeds but the bike’s magic lies in the mid-range to top-end of the powerband, where the power surge offers hair raising performance. Plus, the sharp handling abilities of the bike makes it absolutely fun to ride on good, twisty roads. The 390 Adventure captures the same essence but from an ADV point of view. The comfortable riding posture combined with the touring and off-roading abilities of the bike makes it the perfect option for a one-bike garage. For the off-road enthusiasts out there, the 390 Enduro R is a great option with the narrow seats and slim body panels helping the rider in gripping the tank properly while hitting those off-road trails.
For those riders who want the gut-punching performance of a KTM bike but don't want a litre-class bike, then the 890 Duke R is the perfect streetfighter to consider and the 890 Adventure R is the true-blue ADV to consider. As a road-biased ADV, the 1290 Adventure S offers the perfect blend of the comfort of an ADV and the performance of a litre-class bike. The 1390 Super Duke R is an all-out, performance monster and if you are someone who likes to ride their bikes aggressively, then this is a good option to consider.
Sales History/Insights
In FY25, KTM’s best-selling bikes are the 250 Duke and the 250 Adventure.
What’s New with KTM?
The Austrian brand is expected to bring the supermoto, 390 SMC R, in the coming months, expanding the 390cc two-wheeler segment in India in the process. The all-new RC 390 is also expected soon, freshening up the brand’s overall lineup. After the launch of the 160 Duke, the RC 160 is expected to follow suit soon. KTM is also expected to launch its 490cc bikes, the Duke and the RC 490. A couple of electric launches could also be in the pipeline, namely a scooter and a bike.

Amazing bike and very beginner friendly. Duke 250 GEN 3 is one of the most amazing beginner bikes to learn how to ride on. It comes with dual ABS and good features that really sold it for me. I had this bike for 2 years now and I can vouch on the handling, servicing and mileage aspects is one of the best.Read More

I think you should go for this bike if you are looking for great performance with efficient mileage and comfort riding style.Read More
Service cost 2k aa jata hai, best oil 7100 good mileage, good performance 800 tank full ho jata hai, 45 ka average aram sa de deti hai 200cc ka compare kare to 125 cc best hai, har chiz bs top speed 135 hai 200 ki top speed 150 tak jati hai, itna hi fark hai bas power dono me same hai, aur average bhi acha de deti hai, 10 second me 70 sa 80 speed pakad lati hai. I Got this bike on july 2023. The best bike if you are looking for touring. You can trust it and take it to any unpredictable roads. It rules that way. Usually an adventure bike people will get scared to do corners. You can just bend the bike and do any corners since MTC ( Multi traction control) is awesome. As I mentioned if you are looking just for a day to day office commute, this bike is not recommend. Since this bike doesn't like slow speeds, it will be aggressive, the bike come out alive only above 5k rpm. Its designed in such a way that you want to go beyond. But a reliable vehicle from ktm products. A must have bike for touring. Read More
