Fast enough for the daily commute, without breaking the bank

Electric scooters in India started off as low-speed, flimsy alternatives to small-capacity scooters, good for covering short distances cheaply. But nowadays there’s a new breed of e-scooters that bridge the gap between workhorses and high-ticket purchases, the likes of those made by Ather and Ola. Here’s our pick:

PureEV Epluto 7G

The PureEV Pluto 7G no doubt looks like the Vespa VXL, and that does dock some points. But looks aside, it comes across as a strong package. Its 2.2kW (peak power) motor takes it to a claimed 60kmph top speed, while the 2.5kWh battery is removable, and allows for a claimed 100 to 110km range. That said, at Rs 86,999 (ex-showroom Delhi, including Fame II) it’s quite costly.

Hero Electric Optima CX - Single Battery

The lower-spec variant of the Hero Optima CX seems like a worthy city runabout. Its 1.5kWh battery is removable, can be charged up completely in a claimed five hours, and imparts a claimed 82km range. Its 1.2kW (peak output) motor is good for a 45kmph top speed. Besides, its 82km kerb weight and 12-inch wheels (front and rear) means it’ll be quite a sprightly handler. And all this for an affordable Rs 67,190 (ex-showroom Delhi, including Fame II) makes it a good package overall.

Ampere Zeal

The entry-level offering from Ampere, the Zeal EX is another e-scoot that is best suited for city duties. On offer is a top speed of 50kmph from a 1.8kW (peak output) motor and a 120km claimed range from its removable 2.3kWh battery, which can also be charged up completely in five hours. But apart from the numbers, it also gives the added convenience of a adequately large footboard, comfortable ergos and decent underseat storage, for a relatively affordable Rs 75,000 (ex-showroom Delhi, including Fame II) price tag.

Jitendra EV JMT1000HS

The Jitendra EV JMT1000HS is a happy medium between a workhorse and a daily commuter. You get a basic design, with a long floorboard, flat twin-piece seat, and its 1kW motor takes it to a comfortable, 55kmph claimed top speed. Next, 2.04kWh battery offers an adequate claimed 90km range, though its claimed 3.5-hour charging time seems like a highlight. The features on offer is also perfect for the first-time user, and include remote lock/unlock with an anti-theft alarm, USB charging port and a walk mode both forward and reverse. All of this makes it worth the Rs. 72,360 (ex-showroom Delhi, including Fame II) asking price.

Okaya Faast F2T

And now to the “fastest” offerings on the list, the Okaya Faast F2T’s 2.5kW (peak output) motor is good for a claimed 0-40kmph time of under 6 seconds, and a claimed 70kmph top speed. Moreover, it also offers a few nifty features, such as remote lock/unlock and start, remote immobilisation with alarm, and low-speed assist. However, its claimed range figures, which stand at a relatively modest 80km, is a clear drawback, especially considering its Rs 88,999 (ex-showroom Delhi, including Fame II) price tag.
