The Indian-Austrian effort aims to take on the TVS-BMW collaboration

Bajaj Auto has revealed it is working with KTM to soon roll-out high-end electric motorcycles. This was disclosed by Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director at Bajaj Auto, to a publication and he added that an announcement regarding the same would be made at the right time.

This development comes as TVS and BMW extended their collaboration to enter the EV space late last year, while TVS-owned Norton is also aiming to appeal to the luxury electric superbike segment. Bajaj and KTM would definitely target to capture a chunky share of the EV pie with their electric offerings. Hence, expect rapid progress to be made in Chakan and in Mattighofen.

Earlier this year, an investor presentation revealed that KTM was working on an electric Duke, which would share its powertrain configuration with the E-Pilen from sister brand Husqvarna. You can check out all the tech details of these bikes here.

Bajaj already has the Chetak e-scooter, so the next natural step would be a more premium offering, perhaps an electric bike jointly developed with KTM offering performance equivalent to a 200cc petrol-powered motorcycle. Bajaj could make use of KTM’s technological prowess, while the Austrian marque will greatly benefit from Bajaj’s manufacturing and supply chain expertise.

Bajaj is also planning to expand the Chetak e-scoot’s footprint across the country in order to bump up sales of the e-scooter. The firm has revealed that current bookings for the Chetak stand at 16,000 units, while it is available across 27 cities. Bajaj aims to expand this number to 100 cities soon.
