The Royal Enfield Constellation was originally a vintage motorcycle popular in the late 1950s

[UPDATE: Royal Enfield recently shared a teaser containing Royal Enfield logo (shaped like a comet) on a fuel tank, with a picture of the cosmos in the background with several comets flying around. The caption says "Astral. Celestial. Interstellar.", a nod to the name of its upcoming 650cc cruiser, to be unveiled at the 2022 EICMA in Milan, Italy on November 8. Here's the Instagram reel:

Considering Royal Enfield has already trademarked the name "Royal Enfield Constellation", could that be the name for its upcoming cruiser instead of the Super Meteor 650? The teaser certainly hints at that possibility. Whatever it is, we'll find the answer on November 8. So until then, stay tuned!]

Royal Enfield has applied for a trademark of the name ‘Royal Enfield Constellation’. The trademark was applied on February 10, and its status reads ‘Formalities Chk Pass’, meaning it has been applied correctly. What exactly is it? Well, there are two major possibilities:

A Royal Enfield Bullet 650 of sorts?

Royal Enfield used to sell a motorcycle with the same name, the Constellation, back in 1957 in the USA. It was a 700cc motorcycle with proper roadster styling. We reckon Royal Enfield might just use a similar design language and offer it a 650cc guise, perhaps like a Royal Enfield Bullet 650. This will help the bikemaker to eke out even more sales from the 650cc platform, as a bike with styling similar to the iconic Bullet will be perfect for those who want a retro roadster styling with a modern powertrain.

And those who want their bike to look even more retro can go for the upcoming Classic 650, which has already been spotted testing. Just like how the Bullet and Classic coexist in the 350cc segment, Royal Enfield might try to emulate the same in the 650cc space.

What about a modern take on the Interceptor 650?

For representation

The original Royal Enfield Constellation was a fairly sporty motorcycle for its time, and the Chennai-based bikemaker could just bring its genes in a modern avatar based on the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. Think of it as how the Triumph Street Twin is to the Triumph Bonneville T100. In this case, it could feature alloy wheels, with slightly modern bodywork and colour schemes to match. We could also expect it to get better suspension and sportier ergonomics.

The bikemaker already has the Royal Enfield Scram 411, Super Meteor 650, Hunter 350, Shotgun 650 on the anvil this year, so expect the Constellation to break cover in late 2023 or early 2024. Either way, the future certainly looks exciting for Royal Enfield.
