Triumph Scrambler 400 X

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X, as the name suggests, is a scrambler motorcycle that’s designed to take on trails. It’s got the underpinnings to match too. The recently launched 350cc version witnesses a small decrease in performance in favour of lower price, and complying with the new GST regulations that commands a lower 18% tax as opposed to 28% earlier. That said, the price may go up from June 1, 2026 onwards for the Scrambler 400 X, as well as for other Triumph 350s. 

The 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X looks practically like a miniaturised version of the larger Scrambler 900 or 1200. Compared to the earlier 400cc version, the 350cc bike sees no changes in design. That’s a good thing because the Scrambler 400 X looks properly premium, complete with all the rugged elements including hand guards, bash plate, upswept double-barrel exhaust and block pattern tyres.

The 350cc Scrambler 400 X is priced at Rs 2,59,241 making it Rs 10,736 more affordable than the 400cc bike’s Rs 2,69,977 (ex-showroom, Delhi) price tag. The Scrambler 400 continues to be offered in four colours: Matt Khaki Green/Fusion White, Volcanic Red/Phantom Black, Pearl Metallic White/Phantom Black, and Phantom Black/Silver Ice.

Safety Features:

Triumph has equipped the 350cc Scrambler 400 X with the same set of features as the 400cc version. That means it continues with all the necessary safety bits including a switchable traction control, and a dual-channel ABS (that can be switched off at the rear). That said, the engine immobiliser has been removed, and is not available in the 350cc bike.

Convenience Features:

It continues with the same semi-digital console as before. The speedometer is an old-school needle, while everything else is housed in the digital display: odometer, tachometer, two trip meters, fuel gauge, distance-to-empty, and clock. It still also has ride-by-wire, and all-LED lighting.

Rider Comfort:

The two-piece seat is wide and is well-cushioned for longer rides as well. That said, it is 835mm tall (same as the 400cc bike), so shorter riders will have to get used to it. The riding posture is neutral, but if you’re a fan of riding long distances, then you will miss having a windshield.  

Pillion Comfort:

The pillion seat is roomy and has enough cushioning for daily commutes. That said, longer rides will command the need for backrests.

This Triumph bike now comes with a 349cc engine that makes 37PS and 32Nm (3PS and 5.5Nm less than before). It is a downsized version of the earlier 398cc motor, with several changes to the internals of the motor. Triumph has revised the intake, fuelling, shortened the stroke (to achieve the 350cc displacement), reworked the crank and flywheel as well. As a result of the smaller engine, Triumph also claims an increase in mileage by 2-3kmpl. 

City & Highway Performance:

The 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X is capable of accelerating from 0-60kmph in 3.3 seconds (0.4 seconds slower), and 0-100kmph in 8.8 seconds (1.4 seconds slower than the 400cc version). Even with the slightly slower acceleration figures, the bike should be powerful enough for city commutes. Its claimed top speed stands at 144kmph, which is just 2.5kmph lower than the 400cc Scrambler. All in all, while there’s a small dent in output figures, it’s unlikely to be deal-breaking.

Gearbox:

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X uses a 6-speed transmission. The gearbox gets a slipper function to let the wheel slip while shifting to lower gears one after another, quickly. It also comes with a torque-assist function, which basically reduces the clutch lever effort. This means you can easily ride at crawling speeds in traffic without overworking your left arm.

Brakes:

The 320mm front and the 230mm rear disc have been retained from the 400cc version. They offer decent bite, but do note that they do not have sintered pads (which provide better bite) because Triumph feels such aggressive braking is not ideal on low-grip surfaces like trails.

Handling & Ride Quality:

The long-travel inverted fork, rear monoshock, 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloys with MRF block pattern tyres are all carried over from the 400cc version. So it’ll behave similar to the bigger engined bike, which means it’ll be easy to tip into corners; offer decent grip on roads and light trails. The ride quality will also be as plush as the 400cc bike, with a good balance between being pliant and also being cornering-friendly.

The 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X goes up against the Yezdi Scrambler, which is the only proper scrambler in the sub-400cc segment. There’s another scrambler-style motorcycle, the Honda CB350RS to consider, but it doesn’t have the right kind of underpinnings for proper trail riding.
