Triumph Tracker 400

The Triumph Tracker 400 is one of the most distinctive motorcycles in Triumph’s 400 lineup. At first glance, the block-pattern tyres, flat-track-inspired styling and aggressive stance suggest that it is designed for dirt and sideways action. But spend some time with the motorcycle and you realise there’s much more to its personality.

Like the rest of Triumph’s revised 350cc range introduced after GST 2.0, the Tracker now uses a smaller 349cc engine. However, Triumph has given it a unique state of tune to help preserve its sporty nature. The idea is simple: retain an engaging character, sharp handling and premium appeal while keeping pricing under control. After spending time with the motorcycle on city roads, highways and twisty sections, here’s what the Triumph Tracker 400 is really like.

Design

The Triumph Tracker 400 is an absolute head-turner. Unlike many retro-inspired motorcycles that rely on nostalgia alone, the Tracker manages to look both classic and modern at the same time. The long and slender fuel tank, pillion seat cowl, twin-barrel exhausts and side-mounted rear racing number plate give it a unique silhouette that immediately stands out from the crowd.

It’s also the kind of motorcycle that encourages you to take a second look after parking it. The proportions are spot on, and the flat-track-inspired styling gives it a sense of purpose that only a few motorcycles in this segment can match.

Colours

The Tracker is available in three colour schemes (Aluminium Silver, Phantom Black and Racing Yellow), but the yellow shade suits the motorcycle particularly well. It highlights the bike’s sporty stance and complements the retro-inspired bodywork beautifully. The ‘Tracker’ graphics are subtle enough to look premium while still giving the motorcycle a youthful character.

Wheels

The motorcycle rides on 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in block-pattern MRF tyres. While the tread pattern suggests off-road capability, these tyres are surprisingly road-focused in their behaviour. They provide impressive grip levels on both dry and wet roads while still allowing the rider to explore loose surfaces occasionally.

Build Quality

Build quality remains one of Triumph’s biggest strengths. The Tracker feels every bit as premium as the Speed and Scrambler siblings. The paint finish is excellent, panel gaps are consistent and the switchgear has a solid feel. There are no obvious compromises despite the motorcycle being part of Triumph’s more accessible lineup.

Safety Features

The Tracker 400 comes equipped with dual-channel ABS and switchable traction control. The traction control system works effectively and can be disabled when riders want to explore the bike's playful side on loose surfaces.

However, considering the motorcycle's flat-track-inspired intentions, it would have been nice if Triumph had allowed riders to switch off rear-wheel ABS as well. This would have made controlling slides easier and more natural.

Convenience Features

Feature-wise, the Tracker gets the same equipment package as the Speed 400. It includes all-LED lighting and a semi-digital instrument console displaying essential ride information.

Since the console is the same unit as the Speed, it remains difficult to read due to being cluttered, and it doesn't offer segment-leading technology. Nevertheless, it covers all the basics expected from a modern motorcycle.

Rider Comfort

The Tracker’s ergonomics are significantly sportier than what its retro styling might suggest. The low and wide handlebar encourages an attacking riding posture that works brilliantly when riding aggressively.

The riding position feels perfectly suited to spirited cornering and flat-track-style riding. However, daily commuters may require some time to adapt to the posture. Riders coming from more relaxed motorcycles may initially find it demanding during longer city rides. Especially the rear-set footpegs. Riders above 5’7” will feel cramped over longer rides, resulting in frequent breaks. 

Pillion Comfort

We couldn’t exactly test the pillion comfort, as the bike gets a pillion seat cowl, and Triumph has not provided a tool to remove the cowl. 

Engine

Powering the Triumph Tracker 400 is a 349cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine introduced as part of Triumph’s response to GST 2.0 regulations. Unlike the Speed and Scrambler, the Tracker receives a slightly different state of tune, helping it produce marginally more performance. The Tracker makes 40PS and 32Nm to be precise which is 3PS more than the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X. 

The engine feels impressively smooth and refined throughout the rev range. However, despite its refinement, it lacks the exciting surge of acceleration that enthusiastic riders may expect from a 350cc engine. The power delivery is linear and predictable rather than thrilling.

City Performance

In city conditions, the Tracker feels remarkably tractable. The engine pulls cleanly from lower revs and makes urban riding straightforward. Traffic filtering is easy, and the smooth throttle response contributes to a relaxed commuting experience.

That said, the motorcycle's sporty ergonomics mean that city riding doesn't feel like its natural habitat. The bike constantly encourages the rider to seek out more engaging roads.

Highway Performance

On the highway, the Tracker has no trouble maintaining triple-digit speeds and will be surprised when the bike reaches triple-digit speeds effortlessly. The engine remains smooth and relaxed, making long-distance cruising comfortable enough. 

Mileage

The pre-GST 2.0 400cc Speed 400 returned a real-world mileage of around 25kmpl, so the Tracker with the smaller 349cc engine should give around 27-30kmpl quite easily. When paired with the 13-litre fuel tank, one can expect a real-world range of around 300km on a full tank.

Gearbox

The gearbox complements the engine's character well. Shifts are smooth and precise, while the clutch action remains light enough for everyday use. Whether riding through traffic or attacking a winding road, the transmission performs exactly as expected from a modern Triumph.

Underpinnings

Mechanically, the Tracker shares its chassis setup with the Thruxton 400, but Triumph has made some changes to the bike to make it feel different from its sibling. The Tracker’s wheel travel is 140mm at the front and 130mm at the rear, and it has the same suspension setup as the Thruxton. It has a wheelbase of 1367mm. All these small but significant changes do add up and make the Tracker feel different. 

Brakes

With the same brakes as the Speed (a 300mm disc at the front with a sintered brake pad), braking performance is confidence-inspiring and matches the motorcycle's sporty nature well. The brakes provide predictable stopping power, while the ABS calibration remains unobtrusive during normal riding.

City Handling

In urban environments, the Tracker feels agile and easy to manoeuvre despite its sporty intentions. The wide handlebar provides plenty of leverage, and the short wheelbase helps the motorcycle navigate traffic effortlessly.

Highway Handling

At higher speeds, the motorcycle feels stable and composed. Whether changing lanes or sweeping through long corners, the chassis remains confidence-inspiring.

Cornering

Cornering is where the Tracker truly shines. The taut chassis, sporty suspension setup and aggressive ergonomics allow riders to attack corners with confidence.

Perhaps the biggest surprise comes from the block-pattern MRF tyres. Despite their appearance, they offer exceptional grip levels and maintain composure even in wet conditions. The Tracker feels far more capable in corners than its styling initially suggests.

Ride Quality

The suspension setup leans towards the firmer side and prioritises handling precision over outright comfort. Smooth roads suit the motorcycle best, while rough surfaces require a more measured approach.

The ride quality isn't uncomfortable, but it clearly reflects the Tracker's focus on spirited riding rather than everyday practicality.

The Triumph Tracker 400 is one of those motorcycles that won't appeal to everyone, and that's exactly what makes it interesting.

It combines striking design, premium build quality, sharp handling and a playful personality into a package that feels genuinely unique. Whether you're attacking a set of twisties or sliding around on loose surfaces, the Tracker constantly encourages you to ride for enjoyment rather than convenience.

However, its niche character also creates challenges. At Rs 2,49,253 (ex-showroom, Delhi), buyers can spend slightly more and get the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, which offers stronger performance and greater versatility. Alternatively, the 350cc Triumph Speed 400 costs less, feels more practical as a daily motorcycle and remains equally capable in the corners.

If you're looking for the most sensible motorcycle in this price bracket, there are better options. But if you want something distinctive, stylish and entertaining for occasional weekend rides, the Tracker 400 makes a compelling case for itself.

Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450

The Guerrilla 450 offers stronger performance thanks to the larger 452cc engine, a more versatile chassis and a broader range of abilities. Although on the sportier side, it feels more complete as an everyday motorcycle while still being entertaining to ride enthusiastically.

Triumph Speed 400

It’s own sibling, the Speed 400, remains the more practical choice within Triumph’s lineup. It offers similar premium quality and handling capabilities while being easier to live with on a daily basis due to the softer suspension setup.

350cc KTM 390 Duke

Although a bit more expensive than the Tracker, the 390 Duke not only offers better outright performance but also more features, better hardware and way better handling. Overall, the Duke is the better bike to live with and will open up another avenue (touring) to anyone who purchases it over the Tracker.
