BMW Motorrad will start operations in India as a part of BMW Group India and has priced its motorcycles competitively

BMW Motorrad has officially started its operations as a part of the Indian subsidiary of the BMW Group. The group is a combined alliance of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands. The German bikemaker used to import and sell their motorcycles in India from dealer outlets in Mumbai and Delhi earlier. The company now targets to setup exclusive BMW Motorrad dealerships network for bikes in the country. The motorcycle division is currently governed by the existing BMW Group India. Shivapada Ray will be heading the BMW Motorrad division in the country, setting up dealer outlets in Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. The first dealership will be launched on April 12, 2017 in Mumbai.

However, just ahead of the launch, the company has announced the pricing of 11 motorcycles that will make their way to Indian dealerships as CBUs. It includes the BMW S 1000 RR, BMW R 1200 RS, BMW R 1200 RT, BMW K 1600 GTL, BMW R 1200 R, BMW S 1000 R, BMW R NineT, BMW R NineT Scrambler, BMW R 1200 G S Adventure, BMW R 1200 GS and the BMW S 1000 XR. Though the highly awaited G 310 R is missing from the list, we expect BMW to launch the motorcycle by the end of this year.

Vikram Pawah, president, BMW Group India, said, “BMW Motorrad is an inherent and highly emotional part of the BMW brand. Our products stand for passion, innovation and safety on two wheels. We want our existing and prospective customers to forge new paths and make BMW Motorrad a part of their aspirational lifestyle and pursue joy through riding. We intend to embark on this success story in India - with our ongoing product offensive, which we will further expand and by increasing our presence in the country with the right partners.”

BMW has started off by hitting the sweet spot by pricing their motorcycles competitively. However, the company’s future in the Indian market will not only depend on the number of dealerships it has, but also on the kind of service they offer. More so, since all big manufacturers have more or less established their businesses in the country.
