Hero MotoCorp HF Dawn Review
  • Overview

To cater the needs of individuals who are looking for entry level commuter, Hero MotoCorp launched HF Dawn. It is a 100cc motorcycle with minimal body panels with very little features to offer. Being a Hero product, HF Dawn is a trustworthy motorcycle that performs well in every condition.

Technically, It is is propelled by a 97.2cc, air-cooled, single cylinder, 4-stroke, OHC engine that is mated to a 4-speed transmission with up-shift pattern. It generates a power output of 8.25bhp at 8000rpm with the peak torque of 8.05Nm at 5000rpm. This is the same engine that has been used in legendary splendor. Fuel economy of the engine is sound and performs pretty well at mid and low revs.

Hero MotoCorp HF Dawn is drawn on a tubular double cradle frame and boasts the old school round headlight. The machine works seamlessly with telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers at the front and swing arm with 2 step adjustable hydraulic shock absorber at the rear. It has 2.75 x 18 - 4 PR / 42 P front tyre and 2.75 x 18 - 6 PR/ 48 P equipped to 18 x 1.6 spoke wheels. The spoke wheels house 130mm drum brake at the front and 110mm drum brake at the rear.

Following are the dimensions of the Hero MotoCorp HF Dawn: 1965mm x 720mm x 1045mm (length x width x height). The minimum ground clearance of the machine is 165mm with wheelbase measurement of 1235mm. There is a fuel tank capacity of 10.5 liter, while its kerb weight is 109kg. Besides its specifications, the list of color palette include Candy Blazing Red, Black with Purple, Black with Red, Boon Silver Metallic and Classy Maroon Metallic.

  • Design

Hero MotoCorp HF Dawn is “built to cost” product and financially easiest way to be a part of Hero family. Bare bone cost-cutting has been done, so don’t expect any kind of fancy gizmos, loud styling and long list of equipments. The motorcycle is simple from every angle, which is completely old school design. It has a round headlamp with neither a visor nor a cowl, minimal graphics on body panels, simple tank design, steel grab rail, absence of rear body panels, flat seat, spoke wheels. The instrument cluster too possesses only a speedometer, odometer and basic amenities. The designers, however, managed a lot in carrying out the aim of “design-minimum-use-maximum” on this tiny machine.

The absence of an electric starter, somewhere, feels a bit disappointing. Practically, this machine has a lot of storage spaces including a utility box, side panel, under seat storage space and a bag hook at rear. It has a  “simplicity of 1980s” that fails it be applauded in today’s design conscious scenario. Though this may not be a grouse for anyone, as this bike is mainly targeted for rural audience, who looks for fuel efficiency. The build quality is typically Hero, robust and made to last, which is appreciable in the segment.

  • Engine & Performance

Hero motorcycles have always been known for their lasting engine and HF Dawn follows the same principle. It houses Honda sourced kick-started 97.2cc air-cooled, single cylinder, carburetted four-stroke engine that generates the power output of 8.2bhp and a maximum torque of 8.05Nm. This motorcycle returns satisfactory performance with adequate bottom end grunt and sufficient acceleration. Though not expected from this tiny fighter, but it takes 0-60 kmph run in respectable 10 seconds, considering its competitors are also somewhere close to it. The engine is mated to a 4-speed constant mesh gearbox , with the Hero’s standard all shift-up pattern. The gearbox too provides adequate smooth shifting in traffic situations, making it less tedious for the rider. The engine maxes out at the top speed of 90kmph, making it a commendable city ride.

Talking about the fuel-efficiency, this is the arena where this Hero scores massively. The bike performs this job with brilliance, manages to return 65kmpl in city and upto 82.9kmpl on highway, giving an overall efficiency of a good 68kmpl.

  • Ride & Handling

Ride comfort is the second most important thing one can look in this segment, and Hero has done good job on this part as well. With larger surface area of the seat, Hero has ensured comfortable seating position with good cushioning for two full sized adults for both city traffic and highway jaunts. The chassis is of tubular double cradle type, which makes the bike lightweight at just 109 kilos. The segment default upright seating posture with a raised handlebar, forward set foot-pegs and efficiently sized knee recesses on the fuel tank puts the rider in his comfort zone and aids in good direction changes.

The suspension, through a basic setup of telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers at front and swing arm with 2-step adjustable hydraulic shock absorber at the rear, provide adequate firmness to the overall ride. The rear shock absorbers can be adjusted according to the need of the rider. This adding to the high ground clearance of 165mm and a wheelbase of 1235mm, ensures you to glide over potholes with ease. Talking about the brakes, since this bike fall in the entry level segment, Hero MotoCorp HF Dawn offers the setup of drum brakes, 130mm front and 110mm rear.

  • Safety Features

The bike gets all the necessary safety features for a 100cc commuter including a bright, nicely- focused headlight, sufficient drum type brakes and tyres with adequate grip. Recently, the company has added a side-stand indicator.

    Trustworthy engine
