According to a J.D. Power study regarding the initial quality of two-wheelers in India, the initial built quality of two-wheelers have improved significantly and there has been a significant reduction in problems related to the initial assembly. The study was conducted to find out the problems owners face with new two-wheelers during the first two to six months of ownership. It examines 138 problems from seven different categories like engine, brakes, fit & finish, lights/ electricals, ride & handling, transmission and gauges & controls. Findings show that the initial quality records for scooters were 137 problems per 100 (137 PP100) for scooters and 159 PP100 for motorcycles, showing an improvement of 13 PP100 for scooters and 14 PP100 for motorcycles, as compared to 2015. The study is based on inputs from 9,329 two-wheeler owners from 44 cities across the nation.

The riders who ride with a pillion are most likely to report problems as compared to the ones riding alone. Talking about this, Mr. Mohit Arora, executive director, J.D. Power, Singapore, said, “Given the high incidence of pillion riding in India, core vehicle systems such as engine and brakes undergo a lot of stress. Therefore, it is imperative for OEMs to focus on these key systems to help enhance owners’ perceptions of vehicle quality.” He added, “With increasing competition and the frequent launch of new models, sustained quality under such adverse usage conditions can be a key differentiator.”

Owners who ride a two-wheeler for more than 40 kilometers a day face more problems as compared to those who ride less than 40 kilometers. Speaking about it, Kaustav Roy, director, J.D. Power, Singapore, said, “One-third of the two-wheeler owners ride more than 40 kilometers every day. Given this high usage, coupled with the driving conditions in India, it would be prudent for OEMs to focus on ensuring a trouble free vehicle.” He further added, “Providing customers with a high quality and dependable vehicle can improve satisfaction and the likelihood to build a strong brand reputation.”
