Honda CT125 Moped Production Version Incoming

The concept model was unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show

The Honda CT125 comes with a spartan, rugged design language with spoke wheels and dual-purpose tyres. It is powered by a 124cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine. Expect Honda to unveil the production version next year.

Honda had unveiled the CT125 moped concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, and now the brand has filed an application to trademark the names ‘Hunter Cub’ and ‘Trail 125’ in the USA. Interestingly, these were the names of the mopeds sold back in the 1960s, which looked similar to the concept. With the new trademarks, it is evident the upcoming two-wheeler is likely to be the production version of the CT125 concept.

While Honda gave the moniker ‘Hunter Cub’ for the moped sold in Japan, it was called ‘Trail Cub’ in the US and Canadian markets. Honda is likely to continue the tradition and could launch the moped in both the US and Japanese markets.

The Honda CT125 Concept looks pretty close to production with barely any outlandish design/mechanical elements. So expect the production version to closely resemble the concept model. 

The CT125 concept is powered by a 124cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine, and the engine casing looks similar to the one on the Super Cub 125. Honda could use the Super Cub’s engine in the moped as well. It produces 9.6PS and 10.4Nm. The production version is also expected to carry over the telescopic fork with gaiters, twin shock rear shock absorbers and disc brake on both ends from the concept version. 

In essence, the production model of the Honda CT125 will be more of a trail-friendly lifestyle moped than a utilitarian commuter like the TVS XL 100 sold in India. Such kind of a moped may not work well in India as they are generally seen as the poor man’s mode of transportation. Moreover, there are several competitively priced commuter motorcycles, thus entirely eliminating the need for a moped like the CT125.
