Comparison: Mahindra Gusto, Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter, Hero Maestro and Yamaha Alpha

With a share of around 31 percent, automatic scooter segment is one of the most important segments in the Indian two wheeler market, and 110cc scooters are leading it. The competition is already fierce with excellent scooters offered by the two wheeler majors in India, and Mahindra Two Wheelers joined the foray with a new 110cc scooter- Gusto. The company has proposed this new one as a multi-compatible ride, which can be used by all the ride eligible (adult) members of your family. The scooter gets a sporty styling with practical dimensions and lots of first-in-class features. As it has been positioned as a family scooter in the market, it competes with the segment leader- Honda Activa and its other competitors including Hero Maestro, TVS Jupiter and Yamaha Alpha. So, here is a brief comparison of all these automatic scooters with latest entrant Gusto.

 

Design and Styling:

 

Mahindra Gusto

 

The new Mahindra Gusto comes with aerodynamic designing and sporty styling. The front gets a v-shaped headlamp with LED pilot lamps oh the handlebar and clear indicators on the front apron. Rear gets a unique oval lighting arrangement and all the monikers on the scooter are 3D metallic, which gives it a premium look.

 

Honda Activa

 

Honda Activa has a perfect unisex design with a simple but standard appearance. The headlamp and front indicators are integrated in the bikini fairing on the handlebar and almost similar pattern have been followed with the rear lighting arrangement.

 

Hero Maestro

 

Hero Maestro is being offered as a boys' scooter by the company and the styling of the scooter proves it true. The sporty scooter comes with a very masculine feel.

 

TVS Jupiter

 

TVS Jupiter has a perfect unisex design, which is compatible for the needs of the respective segment. The front of the scooter looks elegant with decent headlamp with twin pilot lamps and attractive turn indicators on the front apron. One distinct feature of the scooter, which makes it special in the segment is the 12" alloys covered by tubeless tyres.

 

Yamaha Alpha

 

Yamaha Alpha shares the platform of the sporty scooter Ray, which can be felt in the appearance of the scooter. Having the best aerodynamic design in the segment with a very distinctive rear end.

Engine and Performance:

 

Mahindra Gusto

 

Mahindra has designed a new all aluminum 109.6cc, 4-stroke, air-cooled engine, which delivers 8bhp of maximum power and a peak torque of 8.5Nm. Power delivery remains constant till 7,500rpm, which provides you a better acceleration. The scooter is capable to achieve 0-60kmph mark in just 10.3 seconds and have a top speed over 80kmph.

 

Honda Activa

 

Honda Activa comes with a 109.2cc HET engine, which makes a maximum power of 8bhp along with a top torque of 8.75Nm. Top speed of the scooter is over 80kmph and the company claims to return a mileage upto 60kmpl with it.

 

Hero Maestro

 

Hero Maestro shares the engine with the old generation Activa, hence misses the HET, which results in a slightly poor fuel economy. However, power output of the scooter, top speed and acceleration are almost similar with a better torque delivery.

 

TVS Jupiter

 

TVS Jupiter houses a 109.7cc CVT-i engine with the peak power delivery of 8bhp and the maximum torque output of 8Nm. Top speed of the scooter is more than 80kmpl and the mileage has been claimed up to 62kmpl.

 

Yamaha Alpha

 

Yamaha Alpha sports an 113cc 4-stroke engine, which puts out 7bhp of maximum power and a top torque of 8.1Nm. It provides a smooth acceleration with a constant power delivery and goes up to 85kmph.

Chassis:

 

Mahindra Gusto

 

Bolted on an underbone type steel frame, Mahindra Gusto comes with telescopic forks at the front and spring loaded hydraulic dampers at the rear. It gets 12" steel plate wheels with 90/90 tubeless tyres and 130mm drum brake system at both the front and the rear.

 

Honda Activa

 

With excellent build quality, Honda Activa gets conventional bottom link front suspension and unit hydraulic damper at the rear. Both the front and rear has 10" steel wheels covered by 90/100 tubed tyres with puncture endurance technology. Both the wheels are equipped with 130mm drum brakes assisted by combi brake system (CBS).

 

Hero Maestro

 

Hero Maestro also shares the engineering of the Honda Activa and comes with the similar frame, wheels, tyres, suspension and braking system.

 

TVS Jupiter

 

TVS Jupiter is also bolted on an under-bone type frame with lots of advanced features including 12" alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, front telescopic forks and rear gas charged suspension. However, it also gets the 130mm drum type braking system on both the front and the rear wheel.

 

Yamaha Alpha

 

Yamaha Alpha Runs quite smooth on its 10" steel wheels covered by 90/100 tubeless tyres. The comfortable suspension system combines a pair of telescopic forks at the front and unit swing hydraulic damper at the rear. 130mm drum brakes are provide on each wheel are enough to control the 110cc scooter.
