Bajaj Chetak Outsells TVS iQube In March 2020

Bajaj overwhelmed its competition by selling almost five times the number of iQubes
The Chetak and iQube compete in the premium electric scooter segment. The Bajaj Chetak is priced from Rs 1 lakh while the iQube costs Rs 15,000 more. While the Chetak is available in two cities, the iQube is limited to one.The government’s move to push the use of electric mobility solutions in major cities has given the electric two-wheeler segment the boost it needed. So-much-so that mainstream manufacturers like Bajaj and TVS stepped into the electric market with the Chetak and iQube Electric. Both scooters are equally impressive in their own rights, but the sales chart for the month of March 2020 has proven that the Bajaj holds the upper hand in the segment.

While we expected a close competition, the Bajaj Chetak managed to outsell the iQube by a huge margin. Of course, these numbers still look pale when compared to ICE-powered rivals, but, the low numbers could be attributed to the fact that these scooters are only sold in select cities.

What may have worked for the Chetak, in this case, is its beautiful retro design and premium feel. The scooter looks like it's in a league of its own, and enthusiasts seem to be attracted to this aspect. But that’s not to say that the iQube isn’t any good. It actually makes a strong case for itself in the e-scooter segment. We’ve had a go on the scooter and here’s what we think of it. The Chetak is powered by a Bosch-developed BLDC motor capable of generating 3.8kW of continuous power, 4.08kW of peak power with 16Nm of torque. The motor paired to a non-removable IP67-rated 60.3Ah lithium-ion battery offers a claimed range of 95km in Eco mode and 85km in Sport mode. It has a top speed limited to 60kmph.
As for the iQube, it uses a 4.4kW electric hub motor which makes 140Nm of torque at the wheel. It does 0-40kmph in 4.2 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 78kmph. Range, on the other hand, is rated at 78km on a single charge. Aside from this, the scooter comes with regenerative braking, park assist, two riding modes: Eco and Sport, with top speed limited to 40kmph in Eco mode.
