This translates to one public charging point for every 15 EVs

The Delhi government has recently unveiled an action plan for electric vehicle battery charging and swapping infrastructure under which it plans to install around 18,000 charging points by 2024.

The government claims that this translates to one charging point for every 15 EVs by the said interval. The intent is to have these charging stations spread evenly across the region while remaining accessible. The government aims to implement this grid to ensure a 3km travel from any point in Delhi, based on a report released by the Department of Transport.

As per this report, Delhi currently has at least 2,452 charging points spread across 1,919 locations and 234 swapping stations. Most of these battery charging and swapping stations will be visible on the Delhi EV website and One Delhi mobile application.

This three-year action plan comes two years after the launch of Delhi’s EV policy on August 7, 2020. This policy focussed at incentivising the purchase of electric vehicles to drive large-scale adoption and maximise reduction of vehicle pollution.

This commitment by the Delhi Government towards setting up a charging infrastructure will go a long way in driving people towards adopting EVs. In fact, this move comes as other states end subsidies on electric vehicles. Goa was the first state in the country to end EV subsidies, while Maharashtra recently joined this bandwagon. If other state governments follow suit to take the initiative of establishing charging infrastructure, it will help take the load off EV manufacturers who have to invest additionally over and above their products.
