Yamaha MT-02 Rendered: Here’s How We Think It Could Look Like
Could get similar underpinnings as the R2, but with a familiar MT streetfighter design language
Yamaha recently launched the YZF-R2 in India at a starting price of Rs 2.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It gets an all-new engine, chassis, and features. However, we could also expect Yamaha to launch the MT-02 with the same engine, underpinnings, and features list as the R2. Here's how we think it could look like:
Familiar MT Design
The YZF-R2 took its design inspiration from the Yamaha R9, so we expect the MT-02 to get a similar design to the international MT models, while the fascia could look like the MT-15 too. It could get a sculpted fuel tank with sporty tank extensions, a split seat setup, wide handlebar, and an overall street-friendly riding position.
New Diamond Type Frame
Multiple Yamaha bikes already share underpinnings; bikes like the R15, MT-15, and even the XSR 155 use similar hardware. So we can also expect the MT-02 to get the same tubular diamond-type frame as the R2, along with a similar 37mm inverted fork and a monoshock.
Yamaha currently does not offer the MT-15 in an SP (basically a variant with upgraded hardware) trim. However, with the MT-02, Yamaha could get the chance to add adjustable suspension, similar to what we get on the R2 M, with a Yamaha MT-02 SP variant. In terms of braking, we expect the MT-02 to get similar braking hardware as the R2, with disc brakes at both ends, a four-piston caliper at the front and a single-piston caliper at the rear.

Yamaha R3 New Colour Launched AbroadNew 204cc Engine
One of the biggest highlights of the new R2 is its brand-new 204cc engine, making 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm. We could also see the same engine on the MT-02, which would make it the most powerful bike in its segment.
It will also get the same six-speed gearbox, and we expect the bike to get a bi-directional quickshifter on the higher variants. Just like the MT-15, we expect the bike to get a shorter final drive, which would give it better acceleration compared to its fully faired sibling.
Features Shared With The R2
The MT-02 could get a similar feature set as the R2, with a 5-inch TFT console featuring Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, and ride modes. In terms of safety features, it could come with dual-channel ABS and switchable traction control.
Prices And Rivals
The MT-02 could be priced at around Rs 2.15 lakh (ex-showroom), which would make it a strong contender in the 200cc naked bike category. It will rival the likes of the KTM Duke 200, and the much more affordable Hero Xtreme 250R, Suzuki Gixxer 250, and Bajaj Pulsar NS200.
