With its new pricing plan, the RV 400 now costs as much as the Apache RTR 160 4V. But let’s see how much of a difference they make when it comes to running costs

Revolt has announced a new ‘Cash Down’ plan under which you can make a one-time payment and buy the electric motorcycle outright instead of the previous EMI-like ‘My Revolt Plan’ With this, the RV 400 now costs Rs 98,999 (ex-showroom) including FAME-II subsidy. This makes it around Rs 5,000 more expensive than the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V carb ABS variant which retails for Rs 94,106 (ex-showroom Pune).

While the RV 400 is more expensive there is no denying the fact that as an electric motorcycle, it will cost less per kilometre to run than a petrol-powered counterpart. But how much of a difference does it make in the long run? Let's consider the running costs of both the Revolt RV 400 and TVS Apache RTR 160 4V for a period of three years.

Revolt RV 400:

Daily commute distance:

30km

Distance travelled in a month

30 x 31 = 930 km

Realistic range of the RV 400:

Claimed range - 20% = 156km - 20% = approximately 124km per full charge

Cost per unit (1kWh) = Rs 6.58

Battery capacity = 3.24kWh

Cost to charge up the battery:

3.24 x 6.58 = Rs 21.3

Charging cycles in a month:

930/ 124 = 7.5 cycles

Charging cost in a month:

7.5 x Rs 21.3 = Rs 159.75 (Approximately Rs 160 per month)

Energy cost for three years:

Rs 160 x 36 months = Rs 5,760

TVS Apache RTR 160 4V:

To make the comparison fair, let’s consider the daily commute distance with the Apache RTR 160 4V to also be 30km. Like the Revolt RV 400, consider the Apache’s daily usage to be limited to city runs only. The running cost calculation is as follows:

Distance travelled in a month:

30 x 31 = 930km

Tested city mileage figure:

50.94kmpl

Cost of petrol per litre:

Rs 79.35

Cost per month:

(930/ 50.94) x 79.35 = Rs 1,448.6 (Approximately Rs 1449)

Fuel cost for three years:

Rs 1449 x 36 = Rs 52,164

The above calculation shows the Apache RTR 160 4V is about nine times more expensive to run than the Revolt RV 400! Taking into consideration the maintenance cost will widen the gap even more as there are inherently less moving parts in the Revolt RV 400. Also, if you consider the fact that the price of fossil fuel is only set to rise given a long enough time period, the total cost will go even further up. We will update this calculation with the maintenance costs once we get our hands on the RV 400 for a longer period.

That said, both bikes have their own purpose and value. The Revolt may not be a performer but looks properly modern enough to allure the millennial with its funky and practical, tech-savvy features. In essence, it is a great way to go from point A to point B with minimal expenditure, and also look cool while you’re at it.

On the other hand, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V offers oodles of performance and more importantly, lets you do long-distance runs without the range anxiety that electric vehicles are generally notorious for. Even among its own peers, the RTR 160 4V is one of the most fuel-efficient and involving motorcycles to ride.

All said and done, if saving money is your primary goal, you’d be better off with the Revolt RV 400.
