The second-hand two-wheeler market can be a gold mine if you look carefully

Budget constraints keeping you from owning your dream bike? Believe it or not, there are plenty of options in the market, especially in the second-hand side of things where you could get yourself a good bike under Rs 1 lakh. All you have to do is keep your eyes peeled and play smart. To make things easier, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 bikes you could get within this price range.

 

Suzuki Gixxer siblings:

The Gixxer and Gixxer SF have proven time and again that they are the most potent and fun bikes in the 150cc segment. They handle well and can be the perfect learner bikes for newer riders. The engine-capacity may fool you into thinking their low on performance, but on the contrary, the motor feels lively and has plenty of grunt. Plus, both these bikes still look good for their age. If you’re interested, you could pick up a Gixxer or Gixxer SF between Rs 75,000 and Rs 85,000. These 2018-19 models offer a mileage of around 4,500 to 7,000km. 

If you were to buy the BS6 Gixxer, it would cost you Rs 111,900, while the Gixxer SF would set you back by Rs 121,900 (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi). Essentially, you’d end up saving a lot in the used market. 

 

Bajaj Pulsar 200NS:

Alternatively, you could look out for a used NS200. It’s one of the best bikes you could get in the budget-friendly entry-level performance segment. It’s fast, has a chassis that exudes confidence, and looks that get you all the attention you need. In the used market, some of these are going for about Rs 80,000 to Rs 85,000 (2017-19 models). Interestingly, they’ve only run a little over 1,500km to about 11,000km. That’s a huge saving for a capable bike like the NS200. The new BS6 Pulsar NS200, on the other hand, will set you back by Rs 1,25,030 (ex-showroom).

 

TVS Apache RTR 200 4V ABS: 

The Apache RTR 200 4V sets the benchmark in the 200cc segment in terms of features. It offers a ton of kit that you’d usually see in a segment or two above. For instance, the RTR 200 4V Race Edition, which is available in the used market, offers a slipper clutch, dual-channel ABS, a standard and a digital console with a lap timer, 0-60kmph timer, as well as average and real-time fuel efficiency. Not to mention, it handles like a dream and packs a punch. If you look carefully, a used RTR 200 Race Edition could cost anywhere around Rs 90,000 to Rs 95,000 (2018-19). These bikes have run between 4,000km and a little under 10,000km.

Bajaj Pulsar 220F:

The Pulsar 220F has been an icon in the Indian two-wheeler industry and still stands strong post its BS6 update. That said, a price of Rs 1,17,286 is a little too steep. The BS4 version can be found in the used market for around Rs 75,000 to Rs 85,000 with a mileage of under 8,000km (2018 models). The Pulsar 220 still has a charm of its own and a huge cult following. A twin projector headlamp, sporty ergos, steel braided lines, self-cancelling indicators, and a half fairing add to its appeal. And then there’s the engine that can do triple-digit speeds without losing breath.

 

Hero XPulse 200:

Yeah, we were surprised as well when we saw a few used Hero XPulse 200s up for sale. While it isn’t exactly under Rs 1 lakh, it’s quite close. One of the bikes (2019 model), for example, is selling for a little over a lakh (negotiable) with only around 4,500km on the odo. If you have the right bargaining skills, we could bring it below Rs 1 lakh and bag yourself a pretty good deal. The XPulse 200 may not be the most powerful bike in its segment, but it sure as hell is capable. It’s also the easiest way to tap into the adventure touring segment. Long travel suspension, large spoked wheels wrapped with dual-purpose tyres, a bash plate, high-mounted exhaust, a tall windscreen and comfortable ergos, it has it all. 

If you were to buy the BS6 XPulse, you’d end up paying an ex-showroom price of around Rs 1.2 lakh. You could use the money you save over the new bike and instead, get yourself a Rally kit from Hero itself. It costs Rs 38,000 and makes the bike a lot more capable. You can read about it here.
