Sports tourer vs retro roadster – which one should you pick?

Bajaj Dominar 400 & Yezdi Roadster

The Bajaj Dominar 400 and the Yezdi Roadster are both very interesting motorcycles in the growing 300-350cc capacity segment, but they cater to very different sets of riders. One is a muscular, sporty tourer, engineered to eat long miles without breaking a sweat. The other one is a modern-classic roadster, styled to turn heads at every signal. If you are torn between the two and can’t make up your mind, this detailed comparison will help you find which one suits your personality better.

    • The Bajaj Dominar 400 is one of the most reasonably priced tourers for the package that it offers.

    • The Yezdi Roadster undercuts the Dominar marginally at the base level, but gets equally expensive when you choose the top-priced colour option of the Roadster.

    • Bajaj also offers a better standard warranty of 5-year/75,000km on the Dominar 400 than the 4-year/50,000km warranty of the Yezdi Roadster.

    • The Roadster makes a comeback with one year of complimentary roadside assistance (RSA) and also offers an extended warranty up to 6 years for an additional cost.

    • The slightly longer wheelbase, lower ground clearance and a bit of extra weight should provide the Bajaj Dominar 400 with a more surefooted feel and straight-line stability, especially at highway speeds.

    • The 6kg lighter Yezdi Roadster, with a slightly more accessible seat height and higher ground clearance should be easier to ride in the city and traffic.

    • The two bikes could not be more different in terms of design and styling. The Dominar 400 is an aggressively styled sports cruiser with a muscular fuel tank, multi-LED headlamp, stubby dual-pot exhausts, and sculpted bodywork. Its tall windscreen, knuckle guards, carrier mount, pillion backrest, belly-pan guard, navigation device mount and fat tyres further make it look adventure-ready straight out of the showroom.

    • The Yezdi Roadster carries a completely different neo-retro charm. Be it the round headlamp, teardrop fuel tank, twin peashooter exhausts or chopped rear fender, it brings everything in metal, in a classic style. However, a full-digital console, LED lighting, multifunction rear blinkers (replacing the tail lamp), machined alloy wheels and impressive paint finish give it a modern touch.

    • The Dominar comes in just two sporty colours, while the Roadster is available in 6 vibrant colour options.

    • The Dominar has been tuned for sharper handling response and better control at high speeds, while the Yezdi focuses more on everyday comfort.

    • Both motorcycles get machined alloy wheels, but the Roadster has a slightly larger front wheel, adding to its comfort.

    • Apart from the  Dominar’s wider front, both motorcycles get equally fat rear rubber. However, Dominar’s radial tyres give it an edge in grip and traction.

    • Again, both feature almost similarly sized disc brakes at both ends with ABS assist. However, the Dominar offers slightly better braking performance.

    • The Dominar 400 is technologically way ahead of the Yezdi Roadster.

    • Both feature all-LED lighting, USB charging port and digital LCD instrument clusters, but the Dominar also offers smartphone connectivity, adding navigation assist and call/SMS management features. Plus, its LCD console shows more information.

    • The Dominar has ride-by-wire, traction control, and four riding modes that don’t just manage power delivery but change the level of ABS intervention as well. These rider assist features help to handle the kind of performance that the Dominar offers.

    • The Dominar 400 also gets a factory-fitted touring accessories package, including a tall visor, handguards, carrier, belly pan, leg guards, back stopper, and GPS mount. The Yezdi Roadster offers deeper customisation options, but commands an extra premium for that.

    • The Bajaj Dominar 400 has a marginally bigger engine, and makes significantly more power. It delivers about 11.5PS and 3.6Nm more than the Yezdi Roadster.

    • On the flip side, Yezdi’s early torque delivery gives it a stronger mid-range, making it feel more tractable in urban spaces.

    Verdict

If you ride long routes often, the capabilities of the Bajaj Dominar 400 are difficult to beat in this price range. It comes with a very potent engine, advanced tech, and a more rounded package of rider assist. Its hardware setup makes it super stable and manageable at highway speeds. Plus, factory-fitted touring accessories make it a genuinely capable highway machine, ready to roll without spending extra on upgrades.

If you like retro-styled bikes, the Yezdi Roadster is the answer. It may not bring the most advanced features and tech, but its retro charm is hard to ignore. Moreover, it's light on its feet around town, easy to live with, and offers a characterful riding experience that helps you stand out from the crowd.

    Comparisons With Other Rivals

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is more focused on comfort for weekend rides, whereas the Dominar 400 delivers better performance and technology.

If heritage and nostalgia sync with you, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 will suit you better than the Dominar 400.

The Harley-Davidson X440 brings stronger low-end torque, while the Dominar 400 edges ahead on outright power output.

The Triumph Speed 400 feels more premium and sharper in handling, but the Dominar 400 remains considerably more affordable.
