-
India to play a bigger role in Honda’s global manufacturing and product development
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has confirmed that it is gearing up for a major expansion of its premium two-wheeler lineup in India. The company will introduce multiple motorcycles above the 200cc segment along with new electric scooters in FY27. Honda also plans to strengthen its premium scooter portfolio as it looks to cater to changing customer preferences.

The company says rising disposable incomes, greater exposure to global products and evolving buyer expectations are driving demand for premium motorcycles and scooters. Instead of focusing only on first-time buyers, Honda now wants to build a wider range of products that encourages customers to stay with the brand as they move to larger and more feature-rich two-wheelers.

To support this strategy, Honda will bring more products from its global portfolio to India. At the same time, localisation will remain a key priority to make these premium motorcycles and scooters more affordable while boosting domestic manufacturing. The company has also confirmed that India will play a much larger role in product development, with locally developed models expected to become an important part of its future plans.

While Honda has not officially revealed the upcoming models, reports suggest it is working on new motorcycles across the 125cc, 150cc, 350cc and 500cc segments, along with multiple electric scooters. Interestingly, the brand has also patented several new scooters in India over the past few months, including premium global models. Although filing a patent does not guarantee a launch, it does indicate that Honda is evaluating more premium scooters for the Indian market. So far the brand has patented multiple scooters in the Indian market, like the Honda Airblade which could be a Yamaha Aerox Rival, and the Honda Click 125 which could use a liquid-cooled engine.

Honda’s sales continue to be dominated by commuter motorcycles. In FY26, around 81 percent of its motorcycle sales came from the 110cc-125cc segment, while the 151cc-350cc category contributed just 13 percent. Expanding its premium lineup should help the company strengthen its presence in the fast-growing higher-displacement segment.

The company is also expanding production capacity at its Tapukara and Vithalapur plants by a combined 6.5 lakh units annually, taking its total manufacturing capacity in India to nearly 80 lakh units by 2028 Alongside this, Honda has confirmed that new electric scooters will arrive in FY27, although it believes the pace of EV adoption will depend on the growth of charging infrastructure.
