American motorcycle maker UM Motorcycles made its India foray during the last Auto Expo when it announced it would begin operations here. This time around, the company is looking to make its presence felt not just at the show but also in the streets with the launched three motorcycles and cruisers. Among these two, is the heavy-duty UM Renegade Sport S is priced at 1.49 Rs.Lac, a quarter-litre cruiser motorcycle that could very well give the Bajaj Avenger a run for its money.

To facilitate its arrival in India and manufacture its products here, UM had entered into a strategic partnership with Delhi-based Lohia Auto, which manufactures electric two-wheelers and diesel three-wheelers. The Sport S is the first motorcycle to be launched by UM Motorcycles through this partnership. It is powered by a 279cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that is coupled with a 6-speed transmission. A fuel-injected powertrain results in a power output of 26.2bhp at 8,600rpm along with peak torque of 22.7Nm at 6,300rpm.

The bike runs on 110 section tyre over a 17-inch rim at the front and 140 section tyre with a 15-inch rim at the rear. The UM Renegade Sport S features Endurance brakes with a disc brake at the front but lacks ABS even as an option. For comfort, the bike sports 41mm telescopic Gabriel forks up front and twin hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. With the launch of Renegade Sports S, the UM Motorcycles will lock horns with the Hyosung Aquila GV300, another anticipated launch in this category.

Both motorcycles, owing to their price are placed in the bracket between the smaller Bajaj Avenger and slightly bigger 350cc motorcycles from Royal Enfield. The Sport S looks like a heavyweight with its chunky bodywork, bikini fairing around the round headlamp and fat tyres at both ends. We can definitely imagine such a motorcycle serving dual duties as a daily rider as well as a good touring option for weekend rides on the open highway.
