The Japanese brand inaugurated the first of its new range of outlets called ‘Blue Square’

  • The first outlet was inaugurated in Chennai.
  • Yamaha’s Blue Square outlet will be further expanded to 100 cities next year.
  • The Yamaha XSR155, as well as the updated YZF-R3, are likely to be launched next year.

At the launch and unveiling of Yamaha’s new 125cc scooter lineup, the brand revealed its expansion plans for the Indian market. It also inaugurated the first of its new range of dealerships called ‘Blue Square’ in Chennai. Yamaha plans to expand this dealership count to 100 next year. Apart from selling motorcycles and scooters, these dealerships will also offer official merchandise.

However, the most interesting aspect of this initiative is the brand’s plan to digitise customer records via facial recognition technology. In essence, Yamaha will simply need to scan a customer’s face to access his/her vehicle service history, and the likes. This could make the overall experience more convenient, and there’s also a distinct ‘Cool factor’ attached to it as no other manufacturer uses this kind of technology in the country.

Yamaha is also planning to reinvigorate its CBU lineup, which currently has only the YZF-R1 and the MT-09. Expect the Japanese brand to bring out a middleweight motorcycle next year. Among the other premium products, Yamaha is likely to launch the new MT-03 and the updated YZF-R3 in a BS6-compliant guise -- probably in mid-2020.

Considering India’s love for neo-retro motorcycles, Yamaha could also launch the XSR155 in the country, presumably after the BS6 transition in April 2020. This motorcycle is likely to be reasonably priced considering it is based on the YZF-R15 Version 3.0 and MT-15, which are already on sale in India. With this, prospective customers will have three motorcycles with similar performance but distinctly styles to choose from. This, along with the upcoming YZF-R3, could be retailed in the new Blue Square dealerships. Stay tuned for more updates!
