    What Is a Motorcycle Quickshifter? How It Works, Types & Benefits Explained

    Shifting gears is one of the most basic skills, and among the first steps of learning to ride a motorcycle. Many riders initially find it complicated, but the rhythm of the clutch, gear, and throttle becomes second nature over time. However a quickshifter eliminates the need to do all that once you are in motion.

    What Exactly Is a Quickshifter?

    Experienced riders/racers used the clutchless or skill shift technique to save time and maintain momentum. They used to shift gears without using the clutch, simply by manually matching the engine speed. This technique, however, relied purely on skill set and was not possible for every rider.

    In the late 1980s, some race engineers came up with an electromechanical device that made clutchless shifting possible without any manual skills. It helped race riders change gears faster and more smoothly without pulling the clutch lever or closing the throttle. Racers using it saved momentum and time, achieving better lap times, and the tech was called the quickshifter.

    Once a cutting-edge racing innovation, quickshifters gradually entered the production sports motorcycle world, and now, you can even get one on a 150cc bike.

    How Quickshifter Works?

    Whenever you shift a gear, you usually cut off the throttle and pull the clutch to reduce engine load, allowing the gears to change without grinding. A quickshifter does the same thing, but electronically and much faster.

    The moment you press/pull the gear lever to shift, the sensor on the gear lever detects that action. It instantly signals the ECU to cut off the engine’s ignition or fuel delivery momentarily, and also modulates the throttle valves in some advanced systems. This brief interruption unloads the gearbox and lets the gears shift up or down without clutch input or closing throttle.

    The entire process happens typically within 40 to 80 milliseconds. And, since the timing is controlled by electronics, it is more precise and consistent than a manual clutchless shift.

    Does Quickshifter Take Away Riding Involvement?

    Since it’s an electronic device, many of you must be thinking whether a quickshifter takes away your involvement in riding in any way. Not at all. You still shift gears as you want and feel, and you can still use the clutch if you want to. A quickshifter rather works as an assistant, making the process faster and smoother for you. In fact, it enhances your own control of the motorcycle with precise shifts, eliminating the chances of mismatched engine speed while shifting. It remains the same human process, just quicker, with fewer chances of error and without abrupt shifting, which pays off when riding spiritedly.

    What are the Types of Quickshifters?

    We can differentiate quickshifters into two main categories:

    Upshifts-only Type Of Quickshifters: These are the most common types and are found on many entry-level sports bikes and mid-capacity street bikes. They help offer clutchless upshifts without cutting off the throttle. The Yamaha R15 V4 is the most affordable bike with an upshift-only quickshifter. 

    Bidirectional quickshifters: Bidirectional quickshifters assist both clutchless upshifts and downshifts. When downshifting, it automatically blips the throttle to match engine RPM with the lower gear. It is the same process that racers typically use for manual clutchless downshifts.     Why Are Quickshifters Useful?

    The greatest advantage of a quickshifter is speed, but there are many more reasons that made quickshifters move from racetracks to streets. These benefits touch upon both performance and everyday riding comfort.

    Faster Gear Changes: Every millisecond counts in racing or performance motorcycling. A quickshifter lets the rider shift more quickly and without interrupting the power delivery. It saves time on each shift, and you can do the math on how much time a rider can shave off in every lap over a series of shifts. On the road, it can help you during spirited riding, with speedy overtakes and accelerating out of a corner.

    Smoother Transitions: Since a quickshifter precisely manages the engine load to the gearbox's needs, the shifts feel clean and smooth. This also reduces abrupt shifting and the resulting jerky motion.

    Reduced Rider Fatigue: Repeated clutch pulls and throttle modulations can sometimes tire your hands, especially when you are riding aggressively or on a long ride. With a quickshifter doing part of the job, riding becomes more relaxed.

    Improved Focus and Control: With a quickshifter, you don’t have to plan clutch operation or manage throttle for every gear shift. Because of this, the rider can focus more on other things, such as braking, cornering line, and performance control. 

    Reduce Clutch and Transmission Wear: Lesser use of the clutch during acceleration reduces wear on clutch components. Moreover, precise management of load during shifts minimises stress on the gearbox components, preserving its lifespan.

    Are Quickshifters Essential?

    It depends on your riding style. It is for those who like to keep the engine revs at moderate to high speeds - something that’s relatable mostly to performance riding. That means a quickshifter can be useful for those who love spirited highway riding, accelerate into corners, or take their motorcycles for track days. However, in slow-moving city traffic, the engine mostly runs at lower RPMs, which dulls down the advantages of a quickshifter.

    The reduced cost of the technology has made quickshifters more accessible, and they are now appearing even on entry-level sports bikes and mid-range tourers. If you use your motorcycle just for commuting, then it doesn’t make a lot of sense. However, it is pretty useful for those who are into performance riding. And even riders who prefer a bit of spirited riding on open roads or long routes will also find a quickshifter worth spending extra for the better riding experience.
