The most affordable BMW bikes are off to a good start in global markets

  • Both the BMW G 310 twins are manufactured in India.
  • Sales crossed 24,000 mark last year.
  • The BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS retail for Rs 2.99 lakh and Rs 3.49 lakh respectively.

When BMW announced the pricing of the G 310 twins, it took Indian bikers by surprise. The relatively high asking price meant that sales for the bikes have been slow, but it seems that isn't the case in global markets. On the sidelines of the BMW R 1250 GS launch in India, the German company said that the BMW G 310 R and the BMW G 310 GS are among the five best selling motorcycles for BMW. According to company officials, over 24,400 units of the G 310 twins have been sold globally.

Both the motorcycles were designed and developed by BMW Motorrad in Germany but are manufactured by TVS in India. In fact, the G 310 duo are the first offerings from the German two-wheeler giant to be built in India. In terms of pricing, the G 310 R retails for Rs 2.99 lakh while the G 310 GS has been priced at Rs 3.49 lakh.

The BMW G 310 R is a streetbike and competes against the likes of the KTM RC 390 and the soon to be launched Honda CB300R. The G 310 GS is the smallest ADV offering in BMW's portfolio and doesn't have any direct rival as with respect to pricing, it sits between the Royal Enfield Himalayan and the Kawasaki Versys X-300. Powering both the machines is the same liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 313cc engine that produces 34PS at 9,500rpm and 28Nm of torque at 7,500rpm. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed gearbox. Cycle parts are almost similar, with the G 310 GS employing long-travel suspension and semi-off-road tyres to better suit its ADV characteristics.
