Yes, we know, a manual gearbox is what makes bikes what they are. Changing gears with your foot adds to the feelings that a bike gives you.  Often, it’s a pleasure to go up or down a slick gearbox when you’re upshifting or downshifting hard. That said, there’s a certain royal appeal with automatic bikes that you just cannot ignore. However, an automatic bike has its own charm, especially if you are someone who doesn’t mind a few luxuries – like the gears shifting themselves.

When Honda first gave its big boy, the Africa Twin, a dual-clutch transmission, or DCT, not everyone was happy. Purists thought the essence of motorcycles is in shifting gears and this takes away from it. They were sad because the Africa Twin was apparently meant to be this retro, old-school adventure bike and now Honda was piling such fancy tech on it…why? 

Well, turns out that question was answered very soon the moment enthusiasts took a spin on it. Not having to shift gears in the city or out on the highway when riding on such a big, heavy bike can turn out to be quite a blessing and the Africa Twin with its dual-clutch gearbox turned out to be incredibly pleasant to ride. However, the big surprise came when people started taking it off-road. Turns out, when the conditions are slippery and you’re already struggling for grip, not having to struggle with the clutch is a big blessing. Off-road enthusiasts could just roll on or off the throttle, and many said they ended up taking this mountain goat to places they would never even think of taking a near-250kg bike.  

Now if you can’t find the Africa Twin on Honda’s website as of now, don’t panic. The bike might be on sale on some specific Honda Bigwing pages, like say Honda Bigwing Indore. The Japanese brand often pulls its big bikes off the website, only to list them up again soon, depending on the units available. Honda Goldwing

The Honda Goldwing is a sofa on two wheels, quite literally. It takes touring comfort to another level. One of the biggest comfort features on the Goldwing is its 7-speed dual clutch transmission – which is standard by the way. The manual gearbox is something you can opt for but it’s not what we’re talking about today. DCTs are quite rare on motorcycles so everyone was quite surprised when Honda first put it on the Goldwing. But since then, even the motorcycle enthusiasts who’ve ridden the Goldwing have come back very impressed. 

All you have to do is go from neutral to drive mode and that’s it, the bike will take care of everything else. There are 4 riding modes on offer – Sport, Tour, Economy, and Rain – and all four have their own points at which the bike feels it’s suitable to upshift and downshift. 

Most people who’ve gotten on the Goldwing swear by the DCT, saying it shifts almost exactly when they would…like it knows them! It also makes the throttle feel just a little bit smoother since there are absolutely no jerks after you upshift. And if that’s not your thing, you can still put the bike in manual mode and shift gears as you wish, using the switches on the left-hand-side switchgear.

The Revolt RV400 turned out to be a sweet bike when we last rode it and there wasn’t much that it did wrong. A decent range, reasonably comfortable seat & suspension, enough performance and the fact that you don’t need to spend on petrol are some of its pros. And it being an automatic means it’s easy for everyone to ride it, even if that someone hasn’t ridden a bike in a long time. Twist the throttle and get going rather easily without having to worry about slipping the clutch or the bike stalling. 

The Ola Roadster is a funky-looking electric bike and maybe that’s what you will like about it. Even the base model, Roadster X, has an IDC-certified 252km range and a very respectable 118kmph top speed. Ola claims that the bike does 0-40kmph in just above 3 seconds, so that sounds good too. All of this for Rs 74,999 means the Roadster X is cheaper than some variants of the Hero Splendor Plus! So you’ll not only be saving money while buying the bike, but also after it, since there’ll be no petrol spendings and even maintaining electric bikes is cheaper in the long run. 

The Ultraviolette F77 is among the best electric bikes on sale in India and if you want something that’s sporty and futuristic the F77 is that. Its performance is on par with a 250-300cc bike and while that doesn’t sound very impressive on its own, the bike has no gears to shift. And that means that once you start accelerating, the bike accelerates from zero to its top speed in one single movement without any interruptions of a gear shift and clutch engagement. That makes it feel quicker than it actually is and the overall experience is very exciting for sure. 

The features on offer are almost endless and you’ll know you’ve bought something premium and expensive. Plus the fact that even the base F77 has more than enough range for your everyday commuting means the bike still has the basics sorted. If you want an exciting electric bike in India, you can’t do better than the F77 for now.

So love it or hate it, you just cannot ignore the benefits that automatic bikes bring. Sure, they’re not for everyone, but they’re quite good. Honda has been making DCTs for its bikes for so long now that it has nearly perfected the recipe. The bikes feel in sync with the rider and it feels like it upshifts or downshifts in an almost telepathic manner, exactly when you want it to. It’s an expensive thing, for sure, but if it floats your boat, there’s nothing quite like it. 

Electric motorcycles, on the other hand, bring the automatic transmission to the masses. Especially when you consider most of these are meant for everyday commutes, not having to continuously shift up and down the gears in stop go traffic can reduce so much stress and fatigue.
