The baby Duke has trumped the MT-15 for the third consecutive month

  • In July, the KTM 125 Duke recorded almost twice the Yamaha MT-15’s numbers.
  • The KTM 125 Duke costs Rs 6000 less than the MT-15.
  • Both bikes get modern liquid-cooled engines and single-channel ABS as standard.

The KTM 125 Duke has managed to outsell the Yamaha MT-15 for the third consecutive month. The entry-level Austrian hooligan recorded a sale of 2,786 units whereas the MT-15 tallied 1,400 units in July 2019.

The Yamaha MT-15 tallied 5,203 units in March, which was when it was launched. It outsold the Duke in April too but the sales numbers dropped gradually in the following months and has now plateaued out to around 1400 units. On the other hand, KTM’s sales figures have been more or less consistent in the last few months, with positive growth in July. Interestingly, KTM’s numbers are stable despite the recent price hike of around Rs 5000. Now the bike costs Rs 1.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), making it Rs 6000 less expensive than the MT-15.

The MT-15 has the distinction of being equipped with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), and a bigger, more powerful motor whereas the KTM 125 Duke gets more premium underpinnings. One of the reasons why KTM enjoys better sales could be the cult status of the Duke range. Yamaha on the other hand is well known for the R15’s legacy but the MT-15 is relatively new in the country. We’ve ridden both the bikes and you can find the reviews here and here
