Let’s see how the newest entrant in the sub-500cc space stacks against the most established one

The Aprilia Tuono 457 is the latest addition to the sub-500cc streetfighter, naked sportbike segment and will directly lock horns with the ever popular KTM 390 Duke. Let’s see how both these bikes compare against each other on paper in terms of price, design, engine, features, underpinnings, and more:

Price

The Tuono 457 has been launched at Rs 3,95,000, making it exactly Rs 1 lakh more expensive than the 390 Duke, priced at Rs 2,95,000 (both prices ex-showroom). The KTM just received a price cut of Rs 18,000 on its ex-showroom price recently.

Design

In terms of design, both the Tuono and Duke have an upright, relaxed riding posture, and aggressive streetfighter look, but their styling differs completely from each other. The Aprilia has clean lines and a muscular build, while the Duke has an attention grabbing, more in your face aggressive and loud design - with KTM using their signature orange colour everywhere.

Features

Both bikes come loaded with features like a 5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity for turn-by-turn navigation and call and SMS alerts. They also have switchable ABS modes, traction control, and three riding modes each: Eco, Rain, Sport in the Tuono, and Rain, Road, Track in the Duke. But the 390 has the upper hand here, by offering launch control and cornering ABS. You can add TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and an electronic anti-theft system to the 457 as optional extras.

Engine

The Aprilia Tuono is powered by a 457cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine that produces 47.6PS at 9,400rpm and 43.5Nm at 6,700rpm, mated to a six-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assit clutch. Twin-cylinder engines are known for offering a more refined and linear power delivery. Aprilia offers a bi-directional quickshifter as an optional accessory. In comparison, the KTM Duke is powered by a 398.63cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that makes 46PS at 8,500rpm and 39Nm at 6,500rpm, paired to a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch and bi-directional quickshifter as standard. This engine is quite rev happy and feels comparatively lethargic at slower speeds and lower rpms, so you have to constantly change gears in city traffic conditions. The bike has a VBox tested 0-100kmph acceleration time of 5.91 seconds.

Underpinnings

Both motorcycles have 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends, shod with 110-section front and 150-section rear tubeless tyres. They also get a 320mm front disc brake, a seat height of 800mm, an inverted fork and monoshock suspension setup, both pre-load adjustable in the Tuono. But, the Duke is better equipped, with it offering rebound and compression at the front, pre-load and rebound adjustability at the rear. The KTM has a ground clearance of 183mm and a kerb weight of 168.3kg. The Aprilia is heavier at 175kg. The Duke also gets a 10mm bigger (230mm) rear disc brake , as compared to the 220mm on the Tuono. In terms of fuel tank capacity, the 390 has a bigger 15-litre tank, while the 457 has a 12.7-litre one.

BikeDekho Says

The Aprilia Tuono 457 offers a slightly more powerful twin-cylinder engine, and more mature styling that appeals to a wider audience. However, its higher price tag could be a deal-breaker for some buyers. Meanwhile, the KTM 390 Duke’s design may not appeal to everyone, but it offers fantastic value for money, making it a strong contender for those seeking an affordable yet powerful bike. It is also lighter and comes with more features, especially when it comes to rider aids.  Ultimately, the choice between the two bikes comes down to personal preference. If you are looking for something more premium, and a twin-cylinder engine is a must, the Aprilia might be your choice. However, if you want a more affordable bike with top-tier performance and more features, the KTM is an excellent option.
