The 2019 R 1250 GS is the successor to the company’s popular R 1200 adventure motorcycle. It stays true to the iconic design of its predecessor with a prominent beak dominating the front and the rest of the body featuring muscular styling. And just like the bike it replaces, the R 1250 GS is sold in a standard and an adventure variant. Compared to the standard variants’ alloy wheels, the adventure variant gets spoked wheels along with a luggage rack and knuckle and crash guards. It also gets longer travel for the suspension, slightly larger dimensions, a 20kg higher kerb weight and 10 more litres of fuel tank capacity.

The R 1250 GS and the R 1250 GS Adventure are powered by the same 1,254cc Boxer twin-cylinder engine that churns out 136PS of power and 143Nm of peak torque. To put things into perspective, the older R 1200 GS was powered by a 1,170cc boxer unit that pushed out 125.7PS of power and 125Nm of maximum torque. BMW has also introduced variable valve timing with the R 1250 GS. Branded as Shiftcam, the system also varies valve lift in addition to valve timing and is expected to make the bike Euro V-compliant. And in a welcome move, the 6.5-inch TFT instrument cluster that was optional on the outgoing bike is now offered as standard.
