Mahindra 155cc Commuter Spied, Launch This Year

The low-cost Mahindra 155cc bike is expected to be launched this year and will target the rising demand of motorcycles in the rural market.

Mahindra’s upcoming 155cc motorcycle has been spied testing again, revealing some more details about the product. After the launch of the Gusto 125, it was reported that the Indian automaker will be introducing a 150cc budget bike as its next product. The spotted test mule confirms the report and the upcoming bike is speculated to be launched this year. The test mule of the bike was spied completely sans camouflage, so let's see what we have learned about the bike from these new pictures.

The upcoming 155cc Mahindra bike gets the most simplistic design which is purely focused on the utility factor. The fuel tank has been carried over from the company's existing offering, the Centuro, but it misses the signature golden ribs below. It carries a flat seat with more than sufficient room for two. Following a minimalistic design approach, the bike gets a bare steel rail construction below the seat that meets a luggage carrier at the rear. However, fibre side panels have been provided to hide the battery box and air filter. 

Featuring a round headlamp, the Mahindra 155cc motorcycle gets a twin-pod instrument cluster along with round rear-view mirrors. The bike runs on 18" spoke wheels, but the company might also offer alloy wheels as optional extras. The suspension setup comprises of telescopic front forks and non-adjustable dual shocks at the rear. Both the brakes on the test mule are drums but we can also expect a front disc brake option on the production model.

Coming to the power mill, the 155cc engine looks completely new and will be a basic single-cylinder, air-cooled motor which can be expected to deliver around 12PS. It will be BS-IV emission norms-compliant, as it is mandatory for new bikes launched in the country after April 1, 2016.

Earlier, we were expecting that Mahindra will bridge the gap between its 110cc commuter Centuro and 300cc tourer Mojo with a new feature-loaded 150cc bike. Now, we can't say which gap the company is trying to bridge in its product portfolio with this new offering. However, it will be exciting to see how the company is going to price this new player as it is expected to cost near a 100-110cc commuter.

It seems that Mahindra is going to try the same strategy with its upcoming product that Bajaj had already tried with the Boxer 150. The latter is still doing decent numbers in the export market, however, it was discontinued in India due to poor sales. Still, Mahindra wants to try its hands in this very limited category in the 150cc segment. The company might be looking at the increasing demand of bikes in the rural market but the product is surely not promising for the urban market.
