Honda kickstarted the gearless-scooter segment in India with the Activa, which soon became the country’s highest-selling scooter. It fended off numerous competitors over the years, but the one scooter that could give the Activa a run for its money has to be the TVS Jupiter. Both scooters have been updated in the recent past with better features, improved mechanicals, and a BS6-compliant engine. But how does the TVS Jupiter BS6 compare to Activa 6G in 2021? Thanks to the switch to BS6, both scooters have lost out on power but now benefit from cleaner emissions with fuel-injection. Between the two, the Activa is the more powerful scooter, but the difference is marginal. That said, the Jupiter’s power kicks in 1000rpm earlier than the Activa, making it better in the city. Both manufacturers claim the scooters are 10-15% more fuel-efficient than their BS4 counterparts, but the Activa has a bigger 5.3-litre fuel tank than the Jupiter’s 5 litres, giving it a better overall range.

It is as if both scooters belong to the same stable. They feature the same frame, suspension, and braking hardware. However, TVS offers a disc brake variant for the Jupiter, whereas the Activa doesn’t get one even as an option. The Jupiter also comes with alloy wheels, giving it better aesthetics and more practicality. The Activa finally gets larger 12-inch front wheels and a telescopic fork, though, which translates to improved overall rideability.

Both scooters have the same seat height and kerb weight, making them apt for riders of all shapes and sizes. That said, the Activa 6G is slightly easier to manoeuvre around cramped-up spaces, thanks to its shorter wheelbase. Also, the 6G has 21mm more ground clearance than the Jupiter, which means more room to navigate larger speed breakers without a hassle.

As seen in the table, both scooters have on offer a host of features with some unique elements. For example, the Jupiter has several variants, which works in its favour as it targets a broader riderbase.
The Jupiter’s ZX, for instance, gets a semi-digital speedometer, all-in-one lock, USB charger with a utility box, and a silent starter system. It also gets a low fuel telltale light which the Activa misses out on. The top-of-the-line Jupiter Classic gets a windscreen, a backrest, and a dual-tone seat. In comparison, the Activa’s standard features are a start-stop switch, an ACG starter, and an all-in-one lock, thus giving it the edge over the Jupiter.

If we take the base variants into consideration, the TVS Jupiter undercuts the Activa 6G by roughly Rs 3000, which makes it the more value-for-money proposition. When you compare their top variants, you find that the Jupiter Classic costs Rs 2,000 more than the 6G. However, it packs better features and aesthetics, and so the hike seems justified. And if that doesn’t excite you, the TVS Jupiter ZX (Disc variant) might make more sense, considering it offers an excellent set of features, oodles of practicality, and more safety, all thanks to the disc brake.
That said, the Activa is undoubtedly the king of this segment, thanks to Honda’s unmatched reliability and extensive dealership network. Importantly, in the BS6 era, the Activa has gotten smoother and more fuel-efficient, thus adding value to the package.
