This will be the RC 390’s first major overhaul since 2013

  • Gets a new TFT instrument cluster.
  • Apart from revised aesthetics, the bike could pack more sophisticated underpinnings and better features.
  • India-arrival expected around May 2021 with a bump in price.

In recent times, almost all motorcycles in the KTM lineup, except for the RCs, have been updated. A major overhaul is long overdue and we might be getting one very soon as the 2021 KTM RC 390 has been spotted testing once again in almost production-spec. We had earlier spoken in detail about the major changes.

A quick glance reveals the 2021 RC 390 looks aesthetically different compared to the current-gen model. The headlamp, visor, and the fairing are similar to the previous test bike while the front alloy wheel is similar to the current-gen model. KTM might be trying out different permutations and combinations to find a suitable setup for the updated model.

The headlamp, resembling the 390 Duke’s, is more visible here and the LEDs on either side (supposedly, indicators) make the motorcycle look bigger than before. As for the overall design, looks are really subjective.

Like the aesthetics, the new RC 390’s ergonomics are different too. The clip-on handlebars and the split-seat setup look similar to the test mule spotted earlier. The riding stance might be similar to the current model but the 2021 iteration offers a bigger windscreen which will result in better wind protection at high speeds.

Earlier spottings showed an adjustable fork, so expect this test mule to pack one too, although the adjuster knobs aren't visible in this angle. Additionally, it gets a revised sub-frame for enhanced pillion comfort and a bigger fuel tank for better long-distance riding. The braking setup of this mule looks similar to the current-gen model and the new RC will probably use a 320mm disc upfront.

Along with all this, it’s expected to get a new TFT instrument cluster, riding modes, quickshifter, and a new exhaust system, as seen on the current-gen 390 Duke and 390 Adventure. The RC 390’s engine is already BS6-compliant so the power output is expected to remain the same, at around 44PS and 36Nm.

With all the updates, the upcoming KTM RC390 is expected to cost around Rs 5,000-8,000 more than the current-gen version, which retails at Rs 2.60 lakh (ex-showroom), post the recent price hike. We expect KTM to launch the new RC 390 in India by May 2021.

Currently, the RC 390 has only one faired rival, the TVS Apache RR 310, while Kawasaki continues to make us wait for the BS6 Ninja 300. In a related development, KTM has unveiled the India-bound 890 Duke globally.
