Royal Enfield Scram 440 vs Triumph Scrambler 400 X: Image Comparison

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 was recently launched in India, starting at Rs 2,08,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). It competes with the Triumph Scrambler 400 X in the 400cc-450cc segment. We compared both scramblers, on paper, to find out how they perform against each other.

Design

In terms of looks, both bikes are very different. The Royal Enfield Scram 440 comes with a muscular and boxy design, whereas the Triumph Scrambler 400 X features a more rounded and sculpted design. The Scram 440 has a single-piece seat and the Scrambler 400 X gets a split-seat setup. Both bikes get a round LED headlight. They also get upswept exhausts – the Scram 440 has a longer exhaust and the Scrambler 400 X features short twin exhausts.

The Scram 440 is available in 4 colour options: Blue, Green, Grey and Teal. The Scrambler 400 X on the other hand also has 4 colours: Matt Khaki Green/Fusion White, Carnival Red/Phantom Black, Phantom Black/Silver Ice and Pearl Metallic White. It is a tough choice between the two, but we personally like the looks of the Scrambler 400 X more.

Engine

The Scram 440 is powered by a 443cc, air and oil-cooled, single-cylinder engine that makes 25.4PS and 34Nm. On the other hand, the Scrambler 400 X gets a 398.15cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine which produces 40PS and 37.5Nm. Both the engines are mated with a 6-speed transmission, but the Scrambler 400 X also has a slip-and-assist clutch. Hence, the Scrambler 400 X makes 14.6PS and 3.5Nm more power and torque than the Royal Enfield bike.

Features

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 is equipped with a semi-digital instrument console, which has a digital inset in the middle. It also has an optional tripper navigation pod that offers smartphone connectivity for turn-by-turn navigation and call and SMS alerts. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X also has a semi-digital instrument console with a digital inset. But it misses out on smartphone connectivity features. It additionally gets an engine immobiliser as well. 

Both bikes get all-LED lighting, a USB charging port and switchable ABS at the rear. This means, both bikes lack smartphone connectivity as standard, but on the Royal Enfield, you can opt for the tripper navigation pod, to enhance the features.

Underpinnings

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 has a 41mm telescopic fork with 190mm of wheel travel and a monoshock with 180mm of wheel travel. For brakes, it uses a 300mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc, with dual-channel ABS. On the other hand, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X is equipped with a 43mm inverted fork and a gas-charged monoshock (150mm of wheel travel) on both. It is fitted with a 300mm radially-mounted front disc brake and a 230mm rear disc brake, with dual channel ABS.

Both bikes are fitted with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels, wrapped with block pattern tyres. However, the Scram 440 features spoke wheels and tubed tyres on the base variant. The Scram 440 has a bigger 15-litre fuel tank, 795mm seat height and 196kg kerb weight. Whereas, the Scrambler 400X comes with a smaller 13-litre fuel tank, a taller 835mm seat height. At 185kg (kerb), it is 9kg lighter than the Royal Enfield as well.

Verdict

Starting at Rs 2,08,000, the Royal Enfield Scram is a whopping Rs 56,496 cheaper than the Triumph Scrambler 400 X which is priced at Rs 2,64,496 (all prices ex-showroom). However, the Scram 440 still looks very similar to the older bike, whereas the Scrambler 400 X has fresh looks. Moreover, the Scrambler 400 X also makes up for the extra cost as it offers a more powerful engine that produces significantly more power than the Royal Enfield bike.
