Yamaha MT 15 vs R15: Which One Fits Your Riding Style?

The Yamaha MT 15 and the R15 V4 are two of the best value-for-money performance bikes under a budget that balance fun and mileage rather well. While both have the same core foundations, they are built for two different kinds of riders. We explain:

MT 15 vs R15: Price & Positioning

The Yamaha MT-15 V2 is the more affordable of the two, priced at Rs 1,64,410 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The R15 V4 starts a bit higher at Rs 1,73,050 and goes up to Rs 1,98,340 for the top variant. That price gap is roughly Rs 8,600 to over Rs 12,000 depending on the variant. The gap largely goes towards the R15's full fairing, added electronics, and its track-focused setup.

Riding Posture & Daily Comfort

This is where the two bikes really part ways. The Yamaha MT-15 V2 gets a wide, fairly easy-to-reach handlebar and footpegs set slightly forward compared to the R15. You sit upright with a slightly forward lean, which makes it easy to go through traffic, especially with the good leverage from the wide handlebars. This basically keeps strain off your wrists and back on longer rides. It's the easier bike to live with, day-to-day.

The Yamaha R15 V4, on the other hand, asks a lot more of you. Its low clip-on bars and rear-set footpegs put you in a forward-leaning, tucked-in posture. That's great when you're leaning into a corner or out on track, but it can be uncomfortable in slow city traffic.

Performance, Acceleration,  High-Speed Highway Stability & Mileage

As mentioned before, both bikes share the same 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with VVA, making 18.4PS at 10,000rpm. Torque is nearly identical too, at 14.1Nm on the MT-15 and 14.2Nm on the R15.

Where they differ is gearing. The MT-15 runs a larger 52-tooth rear sprocket. This results in a quicker, punchier acceleration off the line, useful if you're constantly stuck in stop-and-go traffic. The R15 uses a smaller 48-tooth sprocket instead. What this means is it slightly prioritises top-speed over acceleration, so ideal if you’re riding at high speeds on the highways. Plus, the aggressive posture along with the windshield helps in cutting through the air efficiently, so you won’t have to bother with wind blasts as long as you’re tucked in. 

On the other hand, while the MT-15 is still capable of doing highway speeds fairly easily, you’ll be fully exposed to the wind blasts at those speeds because that’s how the bike is designed. 

As for the mileage, the MT15 returned an extremely impressive 56.87kmpl in the city, and 47.94kmpl on the highway. These are almost 150cc commuter-level figures! In the meantime, we got an equally impressive 55kmpl in mixed conditions. Both these bikes are fantastic when it comes to fuel efficiency, so you need not worry about that as much.

On paper, the hardware is largely the same across both bikes, but a few key additions on the R15 shift its character towards track use rather than daily riding.

We think the R15 V4 makes the most sense if you're younger, love the supersport look, and enjoy spirited weekend rides. It's not the easiest bike to live with in daily traffic, but that's the trade-off for its sharper handling and race-bred feel.

The MT-15 V2, meanwhile, is the one we'd recommend for daily use. It gives you almost the same engine character in a far more comfortable package. Only one thing to keep in mind: without a fairing or windscreen, you'll feel a lot more windblast on the MT-15 once you're cruising over 90-100kmph on the highway.

Our take: If most of your riding is city commuting, go with the MT-15 V2. If weekend highway runs, twisty roads, or the odd track day outing are more your thing, the R15 V4 could be the partner in crime for you. The choice depends on your preference.
