Here’s how the streetfighter and the cafe racer compare with the help of images.

Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition vs Royal Enfield Continental GT 650

The Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition is an engineering marvel, while the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is full of character and brings its own distinct personality. However, what’s common to both is that every biker absolutely enjoys riding both of them. And that’s what makes it difficult to choose between the two when you want to buy one for yourself. If you are also confused whether to go with the suave Italian streetfighter or the classy Brit cafe racer, this detailed comparison is exactly for you.

    • Available in three variant options, the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 has a more accessible starting price, undercutting the Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition by about Rs 46,000. That price difference, however, comes close to Rs 17,000 when you pick the top-spec Conti in chrome apparel.

    • The Continental GT also offers a wider range of colours, while the Tuono Special Edition is available in only two colours.

    • Aprilia offers a more comprehensive standard warranty of 4 years / 48,000km on the Tuono 457 Special Edition, while the Continental GT 650 gets a 3-year / 40,000km cover as standard.

    • Royal Enfield, however, claws back some ground with a more flexible extended warranty programme. Buyers can extend coverage on the Continental GT by up to 5 years / 60,000km through one- or two-year extension plans at an additional cost. What makes it even more convenient is that you don’t have to make this decision at the time of purchase, as the extended warranty can be bought anytime up to 10 days / 500km before the standard warranty expires.

    • Aprilia gets the edge on RSA too, offering 2 years of complimentary roadside assistance with the Tuono 457, compared with 1-year free RSA for the Continental GT 650. However, you can also extend the Royal Enfield’s RSA service for an additional cost, just like the extended warranty.

    • The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 looks a bit more intimidating in size, while the Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition looks compact but meaner.

    • The seat heights of both motorcycles are more or less similar, but their riding postures are quite different. The Tuono is designed for a comfortable upright riding position, especially with a slightly higher handlebar on the Special Edition. The Continental GT, meanwhile, offers a more committed lean-forward riding position.

    • The Tuono 457 also weighs about 39 kilos less than the GT 650, making it much more accessible and street-friendly. The Conti, on the other hand, offers better straight-line stability due to its heft and longer wheelbase.

    • The Tuono 457’s triple-LED headlamp cluster nods to Aprilia's Tuono 1000 R lineage, its aluminium frame is left visible as a styling statement, and its compact, muscular proportions make it a perfect, mean modern streetfighter.

    • The Continental GT 650, on the other hand, is unapologetically retro. Its sculpted metal tank, clip-on handlebars, rear-set footpegs, and wire-spoke wheels pay direct tribute to 1960s British café racer culture.

    • Royal Enfield's steel tubular double-cradle frame may not feel as razor-sharp as Aprilia’s, but it holds its composure well and feels planted once you are leaned over and committed to a line. However, the Tuono 457's aluminium twin-spar frame is lighter, stiffer, and engineered to sharpen turn-in and feedback.

    • Similarly, the suspension setup on the Tuono is much more advanced, which makes it feel much more eager to change direction. Plus, it gets preload adjustability at both the front and rear end. The GT 650, however, gets a more conventional setup with adjustable preload only at the rear, and is tuned for long-haul comfort and predictable behaviour over a variety of surfaces.

    • Shorter, wider wheels further add to the Tuono’s dynamic handling, while larger ones make the GT feel a bit more comfortable on Indian roads.

    • Both bikes get good tyres, but the Tuono gets fatter rubber, offering noticeably more grip and confidence, especially when attacking corners. Also, the GT 650 gets tubeless tyres only on its mid-spec, alloy-wheel variants, while the higher- and lower-spec variants with wire-spoke wheels use tubed tyres. Of course, those shiny spoke wheels take the GT’s theatrics to the next level, but as we all know, tubed tyres are more prone to punctures and can be a pain to repair.

    • The Tuono also has the edge on braking performance, with a more advanced, performance-oriented braking setup and a more sophisticated ABS.

    • Clearly, the Tuono 457 Special Edition is engineered to attack every corner with intent, while the Continental GT 650 rewards a relaxed, flowing riding style.

    • Another wide gap is created between the two motorcycles by the technology they both offer. The Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition comes with premium LED lighting all around, while the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 gets LED technology only for the headlamp.

    • The GT 650 sticks to its retro theme with a dual-pod analogue cluster with a tiny LCD inlay. It doesn’t offer smartphone connectivity as well, while the Special Edition Tuono 457 features a 5-inch full-colour TFT dashboard with a full suite of connected features.

    • The Tuono also gets Ride-by-Wire, enabling riding modes, adjustable traction control, and an optional bi-directional quickshifter. Even its standard suite of electronics is genuinely impressive, while the GT 650 gets none of that.

    • Both bikes get dual-channel ABS, but the Tuono wins here as well with a more premium setup that also allows you to switch off rear-wheel ABS intervention.

    • One very basic and quite useful feature these days: the USB charging port comes standard with the GT, while the Tuono offers it as an optional extra.

    • Engines of these two bikes could not be more different in character. The Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition gets a rev-happy liquid-cooled motor, while the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 has a slightly old-school but characterful oil/air-cooled mill.

    • Both motorcycles deliver almost the same power, but the Tuono's parallel-twin peaks at a screaming 9,400rpm, while the Continental GT 650's larger twin delivers it at a far more relaxed 7,250rpm.

    • Their torque outputs, however, make a clearer difference here as the GT 650 comfortably out-torques the Tuono by nearly 9 Newton-metre. Also, the bigger engine delivers this higher torque at relatively lower RPM, providing the Conti with an easy, unbothered pulling power.

    • The Tuono, however, still wins the performance game with a much better top end and power-to-weight ratio. It also offers a much higher top speed and a crisper throttle response, courtesy of the ride-by-wire tech.

    • Both get six-speed gearboxes with a slipper clutch, but gear ratios make them feel entirely different. The Tuono features shorter ratios for quick acceleration, while the GT 650 can be stretched longer without frequent gear changes.

    Verdict

The Aprilia Tuono 457 is built for a rider who wants to feel every gear change, every corner, and every bit of that free-revving parallel-twin. Its aluminium frame, radial brakes, and electronics package put it in a different performance bracket altogether, and the asking price, while a bit higher, buys genuine sports-bike engineering in a streetfighter body.

The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, on the other hand, is for the rider who wants a characterful motorcycle experience. Its charm lies in the retro shine, clip-ons, and a torquey twin tuned to take you back to the era of genuine cafe racers. Plus, its mechanical simplicity, paired with Royal Enfield's enormous service footprint, makes the GT an easy-to-own machine.

Overall, both are fantastic machines in their own niche. Choose the Continental GT 650 if heritage, torque, and long-term ownership ease matter most to you. Otherwise, the Tuono 457 is surely worth paying a little more for its sharper, more athletic, and engaging ride experience.

    Other Rivals

    • The KTM 390 Duke R doesn’t have that twin-cylinder feel, but undercuts the Tuono on price while packing an even richer electronics suite.

    • The Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 is the more affordable and versatile, while the Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition remains the sharper and more powerful.
